1985 Rock Hit Took Two Years to ‘Whip Into Shape’ for a Beloved Philadelphia Band

17 October 20263 Mins Read

Long before it dominated MTV rotation and the Billboard charts in 1985, one of rock’s most recognizable tracks was almost abandoned before it ever got off the ground.

For Philadelphia favorites The Hooters, turning an early, rough studio idea into the smash hit “Day by Day” required two full years of trial, error, and intense fine-tuning. Co-writers Eric Bazilian, Rick Chertoff, and Rob Hyman kept returning to the track, gradually refining its catchy hooks and signature melodica-infused sound until it was ready to help define an entire era of rock music.

According to Songfacts, the origins of “Day by Day” trace back to an informal jam session where Bazilian and Chertoff were messing around with new rhythms and synth hooks. At first, the idea felt more like a rough studio workout than a proper song.

Yet, despite putting the track aside multiple times to focus on other material, the pair couldn’t let the melody go. What followed was a multi-year process of tweaking lyrics, rearranging chords, and wrestling with the arrangements to transform their experiment into a powerhouse rock track.

By the time the group entered the studio to record their major-label debut Nervous Night, the two years of relentless refining paid off: “Day by Day” emerged as a standout cut, seamlessly blending driving hooks with a rock backbeat that made the Philadelphia scene famous.

Bazilian told Songfacts, “‘Day By Day’ was a song that started as an experiment with Rick Chertoff and myself in my basement. I had that same porta-studio that 10 years later I wrote ‘One Of Us’ on, and a little drum machine.”

He continued, “Rick was over and we were sort of messing around with some guitar riffs. Rick had something in his head he was hearing but he couldn’t express, so I was trying to play it without knowing what it was. We sort of crafted the basic melody of the song and then came up with the ‘Day By Day By Day’ thing melodically and lyrically.”

Bazilian concluded, “Then we spent 2 years whipping it into shape, trying to write lyrics that made any sense. They still don’t, but they sound good.”

“Day by Day” peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. It remained on the charts for the same number of weeks.

The Hooters continue to tour and record music, 41 years after their breakout hit.
