The Louvre is as integral a landmark to Paris as the Sacré-Cœur and Eiffel Tower, but it’s been marred by a slew of crises over the last couple of years, from staff strikes to that infamous robbery from the recently-reopened Apollo Gallery.
Now, protests which have been breaking out across France over the last few weeks – which began with students’ discontent towards conditions in secondary schools and has since spread to lots of cost of living-related and social issues – have reached the Louvre.
According to euronews, protestors have blocked the entrance to the museum – which is the most visited not only in France, but the world – and at time of writing, it remains closed.
A leaflet posted outside the building reportedly reads: ‘We are proud to announce that we are blocking the world’s largest museum.’ It’s thought that the protest group is made up of students from École du Louvre.
What if I’ve got tickets booked for today?
The official notice which was posted on the Louvre’s website about the temporary closure did not outline any information about rescheduling or refunds. To know more, your best bet is contacting the museum directly, according to FTN.
Will the Louvre be open tomorrow?
The museum is routinely closed on Tuesdays, but as for when it will reopen, right now it’s not clear. If you’re in Paris with a visit to the museum planned in the next few days, keep a keen eye on the Louvre’s official website and local news for all the latest information about its status.
