What Is ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ About?
Based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling 2025 novel of the same name, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping takes viewers back to Panem 24 years before the events of the original Hunger Games trilogy.
The story follows a young Haymitch Abernathy, who is selected to compete in the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Unlike an ordinary Hunger Games, the Quarter Quell features twice as many tributes, with 48 teenagers forced to compete in the Capitol’s deadly arena.

Joseph Zada stars as the young Haymitch, a character originally portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the Hunger Games films starring Jennifer Lawrence.
The new movie also features an ensemble cast bringing younger versions of familiar characters, along with new faces from Collins’ novel, to the screen. Among the cast are Elle Fanning as young Effie Trinket, Maya Hawke as young Wiress, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, and Ralph Fiennes as a younger President Snow.
