It’s been a banner year for Video Store—but our latest announcement is one of the store’s most anticipated to date. Supporting our community’s passion for discovering cinema is at the heart of everything that does, and it’s the driving force behind Video Store’s newest shelf: By Popular Demand.
What you’re watchlisting, reviewing and talking about has always shaped the films we curate for the platform. A truly community-first collaboration, this latest collection features films handpicked by our community, from festival standouts to hard-to-find titles, all of which have been directly sourced and prioritized from watchlists, #by-popular-demand tags and specific requests.
Over 12,000 different titles were requested within a month of us announcing By Popular Demand, a testament to the impeccable tastes and insatiable appetites of -savvy cinephiles the world over. We’ve done our best to deliver, working through your picks and securing digital rights as available—but don’t worry if your most sought-after title isn’t in this initial slate, as we plan to keep new By Popular Demand shelves coming, well, so long as you demand them!
Now for the freshman class, which collectively spans more than six decades of cinema, seven countries and five languages. Across these nine titles, some of the world’s greatest filmmakers take us from Hong Kong and Tokyo to Soviet Belarus and a French roadside service station. As you’ll shortly discover, the films below run the gamut from existentially moving masterpieces and creepypasta coming-of-age chronicles to canonical samurai sagas and chilling descents into the very heart of darkness—and all of them are newly available for you to watch now.
Regions and prices vary by title; see listings below for where each will be available to rent. All eight of these films are certified must-watches, so we’ll keep them available on the platform for the foreseeable future, but start planning out your schedule for when you’ll watch each of them! 30 days to start watching after you’ve rented. 48 hours to complete watching once you’ve started.
