Space weapons Part 3 – the current spacescape and its projected trajectory

31 October 20266 Mins Read

Figure 1 – c/o Grok

Following examination of the treaties and regulations governing space weapons and resources in Assessing the legality of deployed U.S. space weapons within existing treaties and Resource and force in the final frontier – examining the rules governing exploration and weapons in space – this third and final article in the series explores the current state of the space-weapon sector.

Specifics of the recently acknowledged U.S. space-weapon deployment are not known publicly, although informed guesses can certainly be made. So, we dive into the issue with a look at what is known and what might be.

The 2009 speculative fiction book The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century by George Friedman helps us understand U.S. interests in space. The book is geopolitical forecasting, not doctrine or engineering analysis. Its value lies in the enduring logic that control of space underpins terrestrial power projection, a doctrine that the U.S. was developing at that time.

Friedman introduces great concepts that can be readily turned into fascinating imagery. He postulates space as the “high ground” of the future combat environment; essentially an “elevated terrain” that provides a decisive tactical advantage to the force controlling it.

According to Friedman, the core component of the Space Force will be crewed military platforms in geosynchronous orbit, which he calls “battle stars”. These will function as command-and-control nodes that manage swarms of “dual use” satellites and associated systems. The force would include orbiting pods capable of launching missiles against ground targets or other satellites and co-ordinate large-scale surveillance, communications, and strike functions of the other components of the battle-force.

Although their deployment is illegal on the Moon under the terms of the Outer Space Treaty (OST), Friedman proposed military bases in multiple locations on the Earth-facing side of the Moon, for logistics, maintenance and strategic depth, and on the far side, for “pre-emptive attack” and to relay transmissions shielded from enemy interception by the Moon’s mass.

Figure 2 – c/o Grok

Of course, U.S. technology has deviated from Friedman’s giant Battle Star, mostly because traditional, manned weapons platforms are considered impractical for orbital combat.

Reasons include:

    • Building, maintaining, and constantly resupplying a massive crewed military space station is prohibitively expensive compared to automated satellites, sensor nets, or small and mobile patrol vessels controlled remotely from terrestrial bases.
    • In real physics, space combat is an artillery duel played out over massive distances using missiles, electronic warfare, lasers or kinetic impactors. A massive target orbiting predictably around the Earth is a sitting duck.
    • A fixed platform cannot easily turn or cover all angles simultaneously. A smaller, nimble enemy can concentrate heavy firepower on a weak or unshielded flank.
    • An orbiting or semi-stationary orbital platform has no capacity to dodge, reposition, or flee. Once pinned down or outranged, it cannot pull back from a disadvantageous position.

According to the June 8, 2026, post by The Space Review, “America’s most exposed power projection platforms,” the current Space Force orbital infrastructure is mostly, with very few exceptions, composed of unmanned satellites performing command, control, communication, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) functions.

Instead of Battle Stars, Space Force satellites are controlled from ground stations such as Peterson or Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado and at other locations. Space Force doctrine explicitly distinguishes its military assets from other services by emphasizing that space missions are predominantly executed and controlled “from fixed locations” on the ground rather than forward deployed, maneuverable units.

But these ground control stations are increasingly expected to be the primary targets of enemy attacks and must be protected.

Worse, and as outlined in the Space Review post, the limited capacity for orbital movement applies not just to Battle Stars but to all space-based assets. There is simply no current ability to change the locations of the large numbers of units on the battlefield when peace turns to war.

Since everyone knows where the orbital and ground-based assets are located, the early stages of a space war might have more similarities to a slow chess game than to a WW2 battlefield “blitzkrieg” of surprise and kinetic movement.

Unless, of course, the enemy decides to bomb continental U.S.-based command-and-control facilities first.

The fear that this could happen is the driver for the Golden Dome Missile Defence System, the U.S. government’s initiative for a next-generation, multi-layered homeland air-and-missile-defence architecture.

The program originated with President Donald Trump’s January 27, 2025, Executive Order 14186 (“The Iron Dome for America”), later renamed Golden Dome. The order shifted U.S. policy from primarily defending against limited threats from rogue states (while relying on nuclear deterrence against peer adversaries) toward deterring and defending against ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles, and other, large-scale aerial attacks from almost anyone.

As outlined in the January 26, 2026, Jerusalem Post story, Golden Dome: Why proven Israeli partnership matters for America’s homeland defense – opinion, the Golden Dome is dependent on technology originally developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries for the existing Israeli “Iron Dome” mobile all-weather air-defence system.

That is probably why the U.S. and Israeli militaries have grown closer since the Golden Dome program was announced.

But whatever changes might have advanced U.S. technology since 2009, the underlying geopolitics and strategy of the U.S. doctrine remain largely consistent with the concepts developed by Friedman and colleagues 17 years ago. Control of space still underpins terrestrial power projection even without the Battle Stars.

So what does the actual U.S. Space Force combat-relevant infrastructure look like in 2026?  It includes:

    • Orbital layers – the current eyes and ears used to track activities and communicate with others
    • On-orbit space control capabilities – the current offensive but mostly ground-based U.S. war-fighting capability
      • These include ground-based electronic warfare systems such as Meadowlands (which provide “offensive satellite jamming”), Bounty Hunter (spectrum detection), and related deployable jammers that emphasize ground manoeuvrability
      • Independent experts believe that any deployed space-based offensive satellites are “non-kinetic” electronic jammers, not debris-generating kinetic anti-satellite weapons. One of these systems was likely at the core of General Dan Caine’s September 2026 comments about U.S. space weapon deployment.
    • Emerging systems – future orbital war-fighting capability
      • Mobile space-based and ground-based interceptors are being developed and flight-tested

The current focus is on building a lot of small, resilient, unmanned satellites supported by ground-centric command-and-control (C2) assets. The small satellites will likely be designed to blend in to existing satellite constellations, using their dual-use functionality to provide natural camouflage.

For now, at least, everything will be controlled through ground stations integrated in the Golden Dome, expected to be partially operational in 2028 and fully functioning as early as the end of 2029.

But on-orbit space capabilities are increasing all the time and emerging systems emphasizing movement, maneuverability and dynamic space operations are on the horizon.

Will the U.S. Space Force possess gigantic Battle Stars in 25 years? Stay tuned.
