In 1948, William Rosenberg used $1,500 in war bonds and a $1,000 loan to open his first coffee shop; Dunkin’ Donuts later sold for $11.3 billion to Inspire Brand

Dunkin’ Donuts has grown from a humble coffee shop into one of the world’s most recognizable coffee and doughnut chains, serving millions of customers worldwide for 76 years, thanks to the vision and entrepreneurial spirit of its founder, William Rosenberg.

However, behind the business’s continued success was a modest beginning fueled by a small investment after World War II.

In 1948, Rosenberg opened his first coffee and doughnut shop in Quincy, Massachusetts, using $1,500 in war bonds and an additional $1,000 borrowed from relatives. He originally named the establishment Open Kettle.

In 1950, he renamed it Dunkin’ Donuts, with the name reportedly suggested by an executive architect who was inspired by the practice of dunking doughnuts into coffee.

In just four years, what was once a standalone coffee shop had expanded to five locations.

Determined to turn Dunkin’ Donuts into a larger food-service chain, Rosenberg began franchising the business, helping transform it into a global staple. The first franchise agreement was signed in 1955 in Worcester, Massachusetts, paving the way for the brand’s nationwide and eventual international expansion.

Over the years, the company has introduced a variety of classic and innovative treats, from its signature Glazed Donut to longtime customer favorites such as the Boston Kreme, Chocolate Frosted, Strawberry Frosted and Old-Fashioned doughnuts.

For years, Rosenberg watched his business grow from a humble shop in Massachusetts into a globally recognized coffee and doughnut chain with thousands of locations worldwide.

The Boston-born entrepreneur believed that success requires more than having a good business idea.

“Some of the qualities essential for success are a clear view of what the purpose of your business should be, the purpose of your life and the importance of persistence,” he told Investor’s Business Daily. “You’re going to run into lots of bumps in the road. The ability to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and fulfill your purpose is essential in the law of success.”

In September 2002, Rosenberg passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a lasting legacy through the global brand he built from the ground up.

A major turning point in Dunkin’ Donuts’ history came in 2020 when multi-brand restaurant company Inspire Brands announced its acquisition of Dunkin’ Brands in a transaction valued at $11.3 billion, including the assumption of debt. The deal was completed on December 15, 2020, marking a new chapter for the iconic coffee and doughnut chain.

At the time of the acquisition, Inspire Brands’ combined portfolio included nearly 32,000 restaurants across more than 60 countries, generating $26 billion in annual system sales. By 2025, the company’s portfolio had grown to more than 33,400 restaurants, with $33.4 billion in global system sales, according to Inspire Brands.

The original Dunkin’ Donuts shop at 543 Southern Artery in Quincy, Massachusetts, is still operating today. It underwent a retro renovation in 2011 to bring back elements of its original 1950s design, including its vintage signage and counter seating. The location has since undergone further renovations while preserving some of its nostalgic features.
