Amazon Prime shares first look at Carrie, Mike Flanagan’s next Stephen King adaptation

13 July 20263 Mins Read

Stephen King’s novels have no shortage of adaptations; last year alone saw three movies based on his work (The Monkey, The Long Walk, and The Running Man), plus the It prequel show It: Welcome to Derry. The first King adaptation was also based on his forst novel, as Brian De Palma brought Carrie to the big screen in 1976.

Now, telekinetic high schooler Carrie White returns 50 years later, and this time she’s coming to the small screen.

On Monday, Prime Video shared a first look at its upcoming Carrie series. The images show Carrie at her high school, where I’m sure she’ll have a completely normal, blood-free experience. Unfortunately, bullying is a common part of a normal high school experience, and we see Carrie getting stared down by someone who will likely bully her. Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive batch of images, including some of Carrie getting bullied in the school showers. No images of the iconic bloody prom scene have been shared so far, however.

Horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan is developing the show and serving as showrunner, director, and executive producer. He’s no stranger to King’s work, having previously directed adaptations of Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and The Life of Chuck. Summer Howell (Night of the Reaper), Amber Midthunder (Prey), Matthew Lillard (the Scream franchise), and more will star in the TV series.

“There’s a modern adaptation that Mike’s applied to the world that makes it completely relevant,” Lillard previously told Polygon of Carrie. “I think that’s the reason Stephen King signed off on this adaptation, because there’s a new approach to bullying.”

He also knows which King adaptation he wants to star in next

Carrie will be an eight-episode series adaptation of King’s debut novel. It’ll follow bullied teenager Carrie as she develops telekinetic powers, leading to that fateful and bloody prom night we know all too well. Here’s the series’ official description:

Misfit high‑schooler Carrie White (Summer Howell) has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.

De Palma’s film was the first Carrie adaptation, and subsequent takes have failed to reach the same heights of this classic. The 1999 sequel The Rage: Carrie 2 was poorly received, as was a fresh 2002 adaptation. Another stab at a Carrie film was released in 2013, and its reception didn’t fare much better than the previous two movies.

The original 1976 movie set a high bar that subsequent adaptations haven’t been able to clear. With the talent on board for Prime Video’s Carrie series, it has a good chance of bucking that trend.

Carrie doesn’t have a release date yet, but is expected to start streaming in the fall.
