Attack on Titan game from Koei Tecmo announces opening cinematic by MAPPA

2 July 20263 Mins Read

Koei Tecmo just shared a ton of new information about Attack on Titan 3, the latest game adaptation of the hugely popular manga. The game, which was first revealed a month ago during Summer Game Fest 2026, is set to adapt the entirety of the manga’s story and will release this Winter.

Attack on Titan 3 was the subject of a lengthy 45-minute presentation held on July 1, that also included a gameplay trailer. The first two games in publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Omega Force’s Attack on Titan series were released in 2016 and 2018 respectively. Both titles adapted only a segment of the original story. Attack on Titan 3 won’t continue where Attack on Titan 2 left off; rather it will cover the full story (which has also been adapted into an anime). Like previous entries in the series, Attack on Titan 3 will include a main story based around missions. The third entry will introduce a new open-world mode that lets players freely explore the game world. The signature ODM gameplay, which lets players zip around using grappling wires, has been tweaked to provide a smoother experience.

While going out on scouting missions and taking down titans will be the main event, combat isn’t the only thing Attack on Titan 3 has to offer. The presentation also showed off opportunities to chat with characters from the series. Rather than playing as the series’ protagonist, Eren Yeager, players will create an original character who participates in the main cast’s climactic events.

Koei Tecmo ends the gameplay reveal trailer by announcing the Attack on Titan 3 release window, which could mean sometime between the end of 2026 and the start of 2027. This was followed by the surprise announcement that MAPPA is animating the game’s opening cinematic. MAPPA is the animation studio behind Attack on Titan: The Final Season as well as hit shows like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Hell’s Paradise, to name a few. Attack on Titan action-scene animator Arifumi Imai will direct the opening cinematic. In an odd turn, however, Koei Tecmo noted that the opening cinematic will not release alongside the game at launch. Instead, it will be added in a future update sometime after the base game’s release.

Attack on Titan 3 will be released this winter on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.

Attack on Titan’s ending debate is about to explode again thanks to an anime remake
