Award-Winning Actor Revisits a ‘Life-Changing Moment’ 12 Years Ago

2 March 20263 Mins Read

Jared Leto looks back on what he called a “life-changing moment” after starring in the award-winning movie Dallas Buyers Club.

The singer-actor delivered a stunning performance after being cast in the character of Rayon, a transgender woman diagnosed with HIV.

The bold transformation and his stunning portrayal earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 86th Academy Awards alongside Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) and Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street).

Leto further cemented his status as a formidable actor after winning the category.

Twelve years later, he reflected on the milestone, sharing great pride, a sense of responsibility and heartfelt appreciation.

“12 years ago, I won my first Oscar for my role as Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club. It was a life-changing experience … I feel fortunate, really proud. I felt a bit of responsibility to represent this with dignity and that inspired me. Rayon will always be a part of me,” he captioned his Instagram post.

The comment section was buzzing with admiration as fans and followers flooded his post with heartfelt messages.

“Amazing movie, amazing actor and singer and one of the best human beings in the world,” one wrote.

“@jaredleto I was moved to tears in some scenes and every single scene fascinated and deeply touched me emotionally,” a commenter said.

A third Instagram user agreed and praised his performance, noting, “Amazing movie. Your performance as Rayon was flawless!”

“@jaredleto Thank you for giving us Rayon. Your performance moved me to tears and gave me goosebumps,” said one fan.

Amid the praise, a commenter mentioned how Leto truly deserved the Oscar win, “You deserved the Oscar … amazing performance.”

The same goes for another who said, “You deserved MANY awards for Mr. Nobody, too. What a great movie, OMG. My number 1 recommendation always!!”

As mentioned, this was his first Oscar award. During his acceptance speech, the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman dedicated the recognition to his brothers and mother, who was also his Oscars date.

Apart from that, he also dedicated his award to the “dreamers,” particularly those who were watching the ceremony in Ukraine and Venezuela and gave a special mention to “the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS.”

“Tonight I stand here in front of the world with you and for you,” he added.

Leto’s Instagram post comes weeks ahead of the highly anticipated 98th Annual Academy Awards, which will take place on March 15 at the Hollywood Ovation Theater and hosted by Conan O’Brien.
