Best-Selling Author’s Classic Novel Ranked Among ‘Most Read Books’ in United States on Goodreads

Some books become bestsellers the moment they’re published. Others simply wait for the right generation to discover them.

That’s the story behind I Who Have Never Known Men, the haunting dystopian novel by Belgian author Jacqueline Harpman. Originally published in French in 1995 under the title Moi qui n’ai pas connu les hommes, the novel has surged back into the spotlight nearly three decades later, recently ranking among Goodreads most-read books of the year. Its remarkable resurgence follows an explosion in popularity across BookTok and other social media communities, where readers have embraced its unsettling story and philosophical themes.

The novel has taken an unusual path to modern success.

After its original French publication, Harpman’s novel was translated into English by Ros Schwartz in 1997.

“In those days there was no internet,” Schwartz told Musing. “I corresponded with Harpman by snail mail. I asked her a handful of questions to which she replied. I wouldn’t call it guidance but rather clarification.”

The first English-language edition appeared in the United Kingdom under the title Mistress of Silence, while the U.S. edition was published the same year as I Who Have Never Known Men, the title that has remained attached to subsequent editions. A revised translation and a 2022 reissue introduced the novel to a new audience after years of relative obscurity.

The story follows a young girl imprisoned underground alongside 39 women, guarded by silent men for reasons none of them can explain. When the captives finally escape, they discover a vast, empty landscape and begin searching for answers about the mysterious world around them. Blending dystopian fiction with philosophical reflection, the novel explores identity, freedom, memory and what it means to be human.

For years, the book remained a hidden gem known primarily among readers of translated fiction. That changed dramatically after readers on TikTok and BookTok began recommending it as one of the most unforgettable novels they had ever read. The viral enthusiasm fueled a remarkable revival, with the reissued edition selling more than 100,000 copies in the United States during 2024 and earning widespread acclaim from a new generation of readers.

Its newfound popularity has also transformed Harpman’s legacy. Although the Belgian novelist, who died in 2012, wrote numerous acclaimed works throughout her career, I Who Have Never Known Men has become her best-known novel internationally. What was once a quietly admired work of literary science fiction has evolved into one of the defining viral book success stories of the decade.
