The storyline Ducksworth referenced centers on matriarch Anita Dupree’s (Tamra Tunie) breast cancer diagnosis, which began airing in later 2025.
Although the cancer was believed to have been caught early, Anita faced an intensive treatment process that included chemotherapy and the implantation of a treatment port.
After sharing the news with her family, her daughters Nicole Richardson Dupree (Daphnée Duplaix) and Dani Richardson Dupree (Karla Mosley), underwent testing for BRCA gene mutations, which can increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
Nicole tested negative for the mutation, while Dani tested positive, prompting further discussions about genetic risk within the family.
Dani’s daughters Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) and Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) were also tested. Chelsea tested negative, while Naomi initially claimed she was negative, before the audience learned she had actually tested positive.
Anita has also experienced difficult side effects from the chemotherapy, including dehydration and hair loss. In recent episodes, Anita fainted at the country club in front of Leslie Thomas (Trisha Mann Grant), an incident that contributes to her decision to share her story publicly in an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings.
On Monday, February 23, 2026 episode, Anita went to New York to the set of CBS Mornings and shared her story with Gayle King. Explaining that she hopes that by coming forward with her story, that it will help someone in the audience will prioritize their own health and potentially save their life.
