Breath of the Wild is perfect, actually

14 May 20263 Mins Read

Here’s a fun challenge for you: explain the plot of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in a succinct and breezy manner that someone who hasn’t played the game could easily understand. Not so simple, is it?

Most of the Zelda games, and especially Breath of the Wild, all have a sort of nebulous, mythological quality to them. There’s always a hero, a princess, and a villain, but the adventure is more about your personal experience exploring the world and overcoming its many challenges. In a clip from an upcoming episode of Netflix’s Therapuss with Jake Shane, guest Kylie Jenner gives a pretty solid rundown of the plot of Breath of the Wild. Predictably, there’s plenty of snark in the comments.

Basically, Jenner hits all the major marks — the Great Calamity, the Divine Beasts, Zelda and Link’s ambiguous relationship. She even knows the Divine Beasts were originally friendly, which I’d totally forgotten. Clearly, she’s actually played this game for a significant chunk of time. Sure, she slips up with the terminology a little, though that’s partly because the producer tells her the villain’s name is “Gandorf” from off-screen. He’s wrong, but confidently so, so she just rolls with it. And honestly, it’s pretty reasonable to confuse a character who’s alternately known as Ganon and Ganondorf as “Gandorf.” It also kinda sounds like Gandalf.

“It’s the most intricate… Like, I’ve played for days. And hours,” Jenner said of her experience with Breath of the Wild.

Right on cue are people on X.com claiming Jenner’s not a “real” gamer or that her boyfriend Timothée Chalamet, who once had a YouTube channel where he modified Xbox controllers before he was famous, introduced her to the hobby. Jenner grew up wealthy in Los Angeles with a ton of siblings, so I sincerely doubt she needed to wait three decades for Paul Atreides to introduce her to the concept of Nintendo. Along with her sister Kendall, she was the star of a fashion-themed mobile game, Kendall and Kylie, that was live from 2016 to 2022. Jenner also has a job that involves a lot of long-haul flights and downtime, so it’s not surprising that she’d be into games. I am convinced that she had a glittery pink Nintendo DS covered in cute stickers, and you can’t tell me anything differently.

In a glimmer of hope for the future, in addition to the usual haters there are a decent number of supportive comments on the Netflix post as well, from fans surprised and happy that she shares their fondness for the classic RPG series. “Kylie if you’re reading this cook with the hearty radishes they are OP,” wrote one supporter.

In other Zelda news, Shigeru Miyamoto announced earlier this week that the release date for the live-action Legend of Zelda movie would shift one week earlier than previously planned. The film will come to theaters on April 30, 2027, instead of May 7.
