Chemical explosion at Longview plant injures multiple people

LONGVIEW, Wash. – A major chemical explosion injured multiple people at the Nippon plant in Longview on Tuesday morning, triggering a massive emergency response that has forced officials to close off the surrounding industrial area. 

What we know:

According to the Longview Fire Department, the incident happened 7:30 a.m. at Nippon Dynawave Packaging at 3401 Industrial Way. 

Crews responded to a report of a rupture of a tank containing white liquor. 

The blast caused fatalities and multiple injuries during the incident. 

Authorities have locked down the immediate perimeter, instructing residents to stay away from Industrial Way and avoid all surrounding paths while rescue teams manage the scene.

What we don’t know:

Authorities did not say how many people were killed or injured. 

Officials said there is no immediate threat to the surrounding community, but the public should stay clear of the area.
