When José Andrés recreates desserts
Los Angeles, July 2012
The title of Roger Vadim’s 1956 film, “…And God Created Woman” starring Brigitte Bardot, comes to mind as we propose that chef José Andrés created — or at least recreated — desserts at The Bazaar at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills.
The best sweet ending
I had dinner there a few weeks ago. At the end I was forced by general manager Shannon Ferguson to try the new desserts — I say “forced” because chef de cuisine Joshua Whigham had already sent enough dishes to satisfy my appetite.

After trying three of the sweets prepared à la minute, I was, and so were my guests, extremely satisfied by the tasting. Andrés combined olive oil ice cream and grapefruit; completely reinterpreted the snack “pan con chocolate” with chocolate flan and brioche ice cream; and gave a new dimension to “Gin and Tonic” by turning his favorite cocktail into sorbet.
And the other piece of good news is that they are only $12 each! I think we need to create a Top 10 Los Angeles Desserts list to honor Andrés’ creativity.
