Dorian Awards Crown “Schmigadoon!” and “Ragtime” – front mezz junkies, Theater News

Frontmezzjunkies reports: GALECA’s 2026 Dorian Theater Awards offer one last snapshot of Broadway’s awards race before Tony night.

By Ross

One of my favourite parts of awards season is watching the final pieces fall into place before the Tony Awards. By the time the last major theatre critics group announces its winners, patterns begin to emerge, surprises reveal themselves, and a few races suddenly become much more difficult to predict.

That final chapter arrived this week as GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, announced the winners of its 2026 Dorian Theater Awards. As the last major New York-based awards body to weigh in before the Tony Awards on June 7, the results provide one final glimpse into Broadway’s most competitive races.

The evening’s biggest Broadway winner was Schmigadoon!, which claimed Outstanding Broadway Musical along with Outstanding Book of a Broadway Musical for creator Cinco Paul. The musical has now accumulated major wins from the Drama Desk Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards, and Chita Rivera Awards, further strengthening its position heading into Tony night.

Still, the race may not be entirely settled. The Lost Boys claimed Outstanding Original Score for composers The Rescues, suggesting that enthusiasm for the vampire musical remains strong. With voters continuing to split recognition between the season’s major contenders, the Best Musical contest remains one of the most closely watched categories.

In the play divisions, The Balusters and Giant shared Outstanding Broadway Play honours in a rare tie. Both productions also received additional recognition, with David Lindsay-Abaire winning Outstanding Script of a Broadway Play for The Balusters and John Lithgow taking Outstanding Lead Performance in a Broadway Play for Giant. The split decision leaves Broadway’s top play race looking as competitive as ever heading into the final weekend of voting.

Among revivals, Ragtime continued its remarkable awards-season run by winning Outstanding Broadway Musical Revival. The production also collected Outstanding Broadway Ensemble, while Joshua Henry added another major acting prize with a victory for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Broadway Musical. Few productions arrive at Tony night carrying more momentum.

The revival of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman also strengthened its standing, winning Outstanding Broadway Play Revival. Yet several acting categories produced intriguing results. Alden Ehrenreich earned Outstanding Featured Performance in a Broadway Play for Becky Shaw, while Lithgow’s victory over Nathan Lane in the lead acting category suggests that several performance races remain very much in play.

One of the evening’s most notable surprises came from Titaníque, where Layton Williams captured Outstanding Featured Performance in a Broadway Musical. Combined with recent recognition in London, the win further elevates Williams in what has become one of the season’s most competitive acting categories.

Beyond Broadway, Jordan Tannahill’s Prince Faggot emerged as the night’s dominant off-Broadway success story. The production collected five awards, including Outstanding Off-Broadway Play and Outstanding Writing for an Off-Broadway Production, further cementing its status as one of the year’s most celebrated new works.

The Dorian Awards also celebrated broader contributions to theatre and queer culture. Qween Jean was named LGBTQ Theater Artist of the Season, while ballroom pioneer Junior LaBeija received the LGBTQ Theater Trailblazer Award in recognition of a lifetime dedicated to creating art, visibility, and community.

As Tony Awards night approaches, the Dorian winners offer one final reminder that awards season is rarely as straightforward as it first appears. Some races now seem clearer than ever, while others remain tantalizingly uncertain. Yet that unpredictability is part of what makes this stretch of the theatre season so exciting. The clues may be in front of us, but the final answers will not arrive until the curtain rises at Radio City Music Hall.
