Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine donated $70 million to USC in 2013, creating the Iovine and Young Academy for arts and technology

Dr. Dre and music executive Jimmy Iovine donated $70 million to the University of Southern California (USC) in 2013 to establish an undergraduate academy that combines arts, technology, business and design.

The gift created the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation, a four-year program designed to help students turn creative ideas into real products and businesses.

The donation brought together two major names in the music industry to support a new way of learning. Rather than focusing on just one subject, the academy was designed for students interested in several fields, including music, computer science, engineering, marketing, entrepreneurship and visual design.

USC announced that the academy would welcome its first class of 25 students in fall 2014. Students would learn from faculty members across different university schools and meet professionals from the arts and entertainment industries.

The $70 million gift also formed part of USC’s larger fundraising campaign to support its academic programs and expand its impact. The academy’s goal was to prepare students to become creative leaders who could develop new technologies, artistic projects and business ideas.

At the time of the announcement, USC President C. L. Max Nikias praised the gift and its potential effect on education.

“The vision and generosity of Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young will profoundly influence the way all of us perceive and experience artistic media,” Nikias said.

Iovine helped develop the careers of major recording artists, while Dr. Dre became known as a rapper, producer and music entrepreneur.

Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, also spoke about the importance of the project when it was announced.

“I feel like this is the biggest, most exciting and probably the most important thing that I’ve done in my career,” he told The New York Times.

The academy was created for students who wanted to explore ideas beyond the limits of a traditional college program. Its courses would combine lessons from business, fine arts, engineering and music, allowing students to understand how these areas can work together.

Four USC schools were set to contribute their expertise: the Marshall School of Business, the Roski School of Fine Arts, the Viterbi School of Engineering and the Thornton School of Music.

The program’s curriculum centered on four main areas: arts and entrepreneurship; technology, design and marketability; concept and business platforms; and creating a prototype.

A prototype is an early version of a product or idea. It allows creators to test whether something works before developing a finished version.

Students would receive one-on-one guidance from faculty members and have opportunities to learn from guest speakers in entertainment, business and the arts. The program also planned to offer internships to help students gain experience outside the classroom.

One of the academy’s main features was a fourth-year learning space called the “Garage.” During their final year, students would work in self-directed teams to develop a project into a prototype.

They could work with other USC students, including those outside the academy. Faculty members, artists and business leaders would guide the teams, while venture capitalists and other experts could offer advice on turning their ideas into real-world projects.

This approach aimed to give students experience in teamwork, problem-solving, product design and business planning. It also encouraged them to take creative risks and explore ideas that might not fit neatly into a single subject.

The academy’s first director, Erica Muhl, who was dean of USC’s Roski School of Fine Arts at the time, explained the importance of this flexible learning model.

“Flexibility is a hallmark of USC, and the academy’s curriculum is incredibly adaptive,” Muhl said.

She explained that students would be able to move between classrooms, laboratories, studios and workshops while working alone or with others. The goal was to give them the freedom to explore ideas and develop skills across several fields.

Dr. Dre and Iovine brought years of experience in music production, artist development and business to the project.

Iovine began his career as a recording engineer and later became a record producer. He worked with artists such as John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Tom Petty, U2 and Stevie Nicks.

In 1990, he co-founded Interscope Records, which became home to artists including Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, No Doubt and Lady Gaga. He later served as chairman of Universal Music Group’s Interscope Geffen A&M Records division.

Dr. Dre rose to fame as a member of the World Class Wreckin’ Crew before co-founding the influential rap group N.W.A. in 1986. The group’s 1988 album, Straight Outta Compton, became an important release in hip-hop history.

In 1992, he released his solo album The Chronic, which helped establish his reputation as a leading producer and rapper. He later founded Aftermath Entertainment, a record label associated with artists including Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game and Kendrick Lamar.

The two entrepreneurs also worked together outside the recording studio. In 2006, they co-founded Beats Electronics, a company known for its Beats by Dr. Dre headphones and other audio products.

Their business partnership helped connect sound, design, technology and consumer products. Those same areas became central to the academy’s educational approach.
