Eagles Star Jalen Hurts Out for Season After Blood Clots Are Found in His Lungs

19 October 20262 Mins Read

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season after further medical testing revealed multiple blood clots in his lungs.

Hurts, 28, was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, according to a statement released Monday, October 19, by his agent, Nicole Lynn, and the Eagles. The diagnosis follows an earlier discovery of a blood clot in his calf.

Despite the concerning development, the quarterback’s representatives shared an encouraging update about his recovery.

“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” Lynn said in the statement, as reported by NFL.com.

According to the statement, Hurts is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment will involve anticoagulant medication, commonly known as blood thinners.

He will not be permitted to participate in contact activities, including football, while undergoing treatment. His return to contact football is expected to depend on when he can safely stop taking the medication.

The statement also said Hurts would remain involved with the team and continue conditioning during his recovery. His representatives anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.

The latest diagnosis follows a series of medical evaluations that began earlier this month.

As the Eagles explained in an earlier statement, Hurts sought treatment for his calf on October 8 after being cleared during the team’s October 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

An ultrasound performed in London on October 10 revealed a superficial blood clot. After consulting with medical staff, Hurts was cleared to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 11.

The quarterback played without limitation in the Eagles’ 19-17 loss. However, a follow-up ultrasound later revealed movement in the clot, prompting additional evaluation and treatment.

The Eagles placed Hurts on injured reserve on October 17, ruling him out for at least four games. Further testing subsequently revealed the more extensive clotting condition.

Hurts’ expected absence leaves Philadelphia without its starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. According to CBS Sports, Tanner McKee is expected to lead the team at quarterback.

Hurts helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX in February 2025 and earned the game’s Most Valuable Player award. His recovery will now take priority as the team navigates the remainder of its 2026 campaign.
