There are few who have achieved what Lauryn Hill has. The prolific songwriter, singer, and actress joined her group, The Fugees, at just 13. She went on to secure several prominent screen roles, including starring alongside Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.
While The Fugees’ cover of “Killing Me Softly” catapulted the group to global fame, it was her seminal solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, that revolutionized ’90s music. The album sold 19 million copies and made history at the 1999 Grammy Awards, where Hill became the first woman to earn 10 nominations in a single year and the first woman to win five trophies in one night, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist.

After 2002, Hill slowed her intense recording and touring schedule. While she never fully stepped away from music, her live appearances became rare and highly anticipated. That rarity is why so many fans were left reeling after Hill made a surprise appearance at the 2026 Newport Folk Festival on July 24.
Concertgoers captured clips of her performance, and fans online were in complete disbelief at her vocal power and stage presence.
During her set, she performed her legendary rendition of “Killing Me Softly,” as well as a soulful acoustic version of her hit “Ex-Factor.”
“Words can’t describe how pissed I am I missed this,” one fan wrote.
“The chills I got!! This is once in a lifetime amazing,” added another.
“I think this is the 1st time in a long time I’ve seen her enjoy performing,” noted another commenter.
Amid the sea of praise, fans also expressed surprise that the hip-hop and R&B icon was not scheduled to perform on the festival’s main stage. Hill’s touring reputation has long been a topic of debate—while critics have pointed to late arrivals or canceled dates in the past, concertgoers consistently maintain that her live performances remain some of the most powerful in modern music history.
Today, Hill continues to perform live and earned her first nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—a milestone that honors her undeniable impact on the industry.
