Ever been curious to know if you’d have what it takes to bond with a dragon and survive the threshing? Well, now you can find out. If you’re brave and quick enough.
Fans of Rebecca Yarros’ international smash-hit Empyrean series have been gifted a brand new, interactive experience that puts them smack in the middle of the threshing.
The threshing is an annual event taking place every October 1st where new cadets attending the Basgiath War College attempt to find a dragon and bond with it, making it their mount and pairing for the rest of their lives. The threshing is highly dangerous and fatal; cadets not only pose a threat to each other as they try to make sure they bond with a dragon, but facing off with said dragons can result in instant death through decapitation or instant incineration.
Now, lovers of the Empyrean series can explore their own threshing through the site, Dragonkind.
Through an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure/point-and-click system, users get sorted into their specific military wing, section, and squad before participating in the challenge of attempting to bond with a dragon. Don’t make it through and get scorched or killed some other way? You have to wait four hours before you attempt again. And according to Yarros, no matter what you do, there’s approximately a 10% change you’ll be incincerated no matter what.

Needless to say, the fan reactions on social media have been…intense. And objectively pretty entertaining.

Additionally, according to Yarros, there are several easter eggs on the website currently and there plans to expand the experience. The release coincided with the publication of the aptly titled Threshing Day, a book of one-off stories all centering characters from the books and their individual threshings.
Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm are out now and available wherever books are sold. The Empyrean series will contain five books; Yarros is currently working on the fourth full-length novel in the series.
