From mullets to shags, men are experimenting with longer locks | Canada Voices

Once defined by precision haircuts, with tight fades and sharp edges, men’s grooming is entering a softer era. Now, looser, texture-driven styles, from updated shags to revamped mullets, are becoming the new standard.

“We’re definitely seeing men move toward styles that feel more relaxed and personal rather than overly structured,” says Anica Iordache, creative director and hairstylist at ModMop hairdressing in Ottawa. “Celebrities like Ryan Gosling are helping normalize cuts that look a little imperfect, which makes them feel modern and effortless,” adds Iordache, who was also named the 2026 Men’s Hairstylist of the Year at Canada’s Contessa Awards.

Illuminated by celebrity influence, the shift is being driven by a broader evolution in the men’s hair industry. “We now have barbers who are so incredible at not just traditional clipper cuts,” says Kristjan Hayden, a Toronto-based hair artist. “Over all, men are also becoming more comfortable with individuality and less interested in conforming to what they’re told they have to look like.” Hayden believes this desire for self-expression, along with the increasingly extensive skills that the latest generation of hair-care experts are learning and embracing, have created the perfect intersection for a rise in refreshed styles.

A prime example is the modern mullet, sported recently by actors Connor Storrie and Jacob Elordi. “It is much softer and more wearable than the versions we saw in the eighties,” says Iordache. “Instead of a dramatic contrast between short and long, today’s mullet blends the lengths more naturally.” That subtlety is intentional. “Stylists often use layering or razor work, so the shape feels gradual rather than rigid,” says Hayden.

Getting a new look starts with finding a barber with a portfolio of similar styles, and leading with clear communication. “Ask for a cut that works with your natural texture,” says Iordache. “Key words like ‘soft layers,’ ‘movement,’ or ‘natural finish’ are helpful.” Both experts agree that a reference photo is essential, too. “A picture almost always clarifies miscommunication,” says Hayden.

Expect at-home upkeep to be simple. “Many men can simply towel-dry their hair and use a small amount of product to enhance the texture,” says Iordache. Still, the right styling product can make all the difference. “A texture or sea-salt spray, or a soft matte paste, can help bring out movement without weighing the hair down,” she says. The pros prefer lightweight styling products, and a light hand with application. “Start with less than you think you need,” says Hayden, “Use a small amount and build from there, distributing it evenly through the hair.” On waves and curls, he recommends adding moisture to the hair first. “Start with a leave-in conditioner and then follow with a cream or gel for hold, depending on your hair type or preference of finish.”

Beyond a style upgrade, lived-in styles can also yield a cost-savings benefit by allowing for extended periods between barber visits. “Cuts with movement and texture often look good even as they grow out,” adds Hayden.
