Garth Brooks Sang a Demo 36 Years Ago That Ended Up Breaking Every Rule in Country Music

10 October 20263 Mins Read

In late 1989, Garth Brooks stepped into a Nashville recording studio to lay down a vocal for a rowdy new track that ended up breaking every rule in country music.

At the time, the song “Friends in Low Places” by Earl Bud Lee and Dewayne Blackwell was already being pitched to established stars across town. The pair enlisted Brooks for help by recording the song’s demo, not realizing it would be the last he ever cut before his life changed forever, American Songwriter reported.

On October 8, 1989, Brooks stood in front of a microphone to do the songwriters a favor. As an up-and-coming country artist, he frequently recorded demos to make ends meet.

When Brooks laid down the Lee and Blackwell song, he heard something special. However, the entertainer didn’t realize just how important the composition would soon become to his career.

“The demo was for Bud Lee and Dewayne Blackwell. I sang the session out in Hendersonville, and for the next two weeks the chorus to this song kept running through my head,” Brooks said, as reprinted by Songfacts.

After hearing the word “no” from artists such as George Strait and Mark Chesnutt, the song remained open for recording. Recognizing the song’s potential, Brooks pleaded with the writers to hold the track for his sophomore album.

“I knew it would be a year and a half before the release of No Fences because Garth Brooks was just getting ready to be released. I asked Bud Lee and Dewayne if I could hold onto it, and without a blink of an eye, they both said yes. Putting that kind of faith into an unknown artist is unheard of,” he added.

That decision didn’t just save the song; it sparked a cultural phenomenon that shattered every rule in the genre.

Songfacts reprinted an excerpt from Brooks’ 2017 book, The Anthology Part 1: The First Five Years. The book quoted musician Chris Leuzinger, who said, “This needs to be like a bar band, like a bunch of guys playing at the end of the night, last song of the set kind of thing.”

He continued, “Usually we were all trained to be very polite in our playing, meaning I would never think about covering up a steel lick with a guitar lick or covering up a fiddle lick. But Garth was like, ‘No, you guys, I just want you to play like you’re in a band. So it sounds like a band jamming onstage.'”

“Friends in Low Places” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Charts in October 1990. It remained at the top spot for four weeks and spent a total of 20 weeks on the chart.

Decades after that fateful session, “Friends in Low Places” remains the definitive anthem of Garth Brooks’ legendary career. What began as a routine demo recording in a Nashville studio ultimately redefined country music and bridged the gap between traditional honky-tonk and stadium rock.
