Gastown’s only hotel will soon open in this historic 19th-century building

6 March 20263 Mins Read

Whether you’re planning a staycation, looking for accommodation during the FIFA games, or helping a friend plan a trip to Vancouver, this new apartment-style hotel is worth keeping on your radar. Opening this March, Block House is Vancouver’s newest stay, and Gastown’s first (and only) hotel accommodation, giving guests the rare chance to stay inside one of the city’s first heritage buildings in a historic neighbourhood.

Located just steps from Chinatown and the waterfront, Block House marks the debut of Kalido House Hotels (formerly Kalido Hospitality Group), which is also behind Vancouver’s Smithe House and Keefer House.

Block House has transformed the top floors of a commercial building that dates all the way back to 1893 into 19 loft-style suites. So if you’re looking for a more homey stay over a traditional hotel experience, this is a great option.

The building itself was originally constructed as the city’s “Commercial Block,” serving as a hub for rail-based trade. Built by the Hunter Brothers and designed by William Blackmore, the building once housed wholesale merchants and distribution businesses.

Another fun fact: the building once had one of Vancouver’s first elevators!

Restoration of the building began earlier this year.

The apartment-style layout means each unit is inspired by mid-century aesthetics and flexible living spaces. Some suites have kitchenettes for shorter stays, while others are equipped with full kitchens and offer longer-stay flexibility.

Guests will have access to local amenities from TALLU, Tealeaves, Pallet Coffee Roasters, and Fable Kitchen during their stay.

If you prioritize space, flexibility, and privacy, the “house hotel” concept might do wonders for your next overnight experience. As demand for Vancouver accommodations continues to rise ahead of the FIFA World Cup, Block House blends this increasingly popular preference for apartment-hotels with the thoughtful design and service of a boutique hotel.

When does the hotel officially open?

Block House opens this March, welcoming its first overnight guests on March 21, 2026.

Stay tuned for more info as it comes, including rates and special offerings.

Where: 211 Columbia St.
