Google to Buy Spirit Airlines’ Data for $10 Million

19 August 20261 Min Read

In Brief: Google will spend $10 million to purchase the data of defunct Spirit Airlines.

The tech giant was the highest bidder in an auction conducted for the data rights as part of the ongoing court-supervised liquidation of Spirit, an Aug. 14 court filing shows.

Google outbid the $7.5 million offer of Mercor, a company that connects professionals to AI training projects.

The purchase includes emails, chats and customer complaint data as well as data related to Spirit’s finance and accounting, operations, website analytics and the Free Spirit loyalty program.

However, the court filing states that no identifiable personal data will be turned over to Google.

A Google spokesman said the company will use the data to improve its products and AI models.

“Any data we receive will be rigorously scrubbed of any personally identifiable information by a third party before receipt,” the spokesman said.

Google is not purchasing Spirit customer information or credit card data.

Spirit ceased operations on May 2.
