When country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons invited a then-unknown Emmylou Harris to sing alongside him, he didn’t just find a duet partner—he found his vocal soulmate.
Their spellbinding chemistry reached its emotional peak with their late 1973 recording of “Love Hurts.” With Harris’ soaring, tender harmonies wrapping around Parsons’ fragile lead vocals, the track captured a quiet intimacy that was almost too personal to listen to. More than 50 years later, it remains a gold standard for country heartbreak.
“Love Hurts” was written by Boudleaux Bryant in the 1950s, according to the website Laurel Canyon UK. It was originally recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1960 and Roy Orbison in 1961.
The song was recorded for Parsons’ Grievous Angel album released in 1974. Harris discussed the song with The Guardian, where she said she found her own voice in her partnership with Parsons.

“I discovered my own voice singing in harmony with Gram,” Harris explained. “There is something about the uniqueness of two voices creating a sound that does not come when they are singing solo, and I have always been fascinated by that.”
She continued, “That song, and our harmony, is kind of a pinnacle of our duet-singing together. We probably did it all in one take, live.”
Parsons died at 26 in September 1973, soon after he and Harris recorded the song. However, their partnership set off a domino effect that jump-started her country music career, which has lasted over five decades.
Taste of Country ranked the song at No. 3 on their list of the saddest country songs of the 1970s. They wrote, “This classic duet is one of those songs you listen to on repeat after a breakup. It’s an iconic crossover hit that has stood the test of time.”
While the Scottish hard-rock band Nazareth would score a massive, power-ballad hit with their arena-ready 1975 cover, Parsons and Harris made “Love Hurts” a country music classic with a far quieter approach. Instead of soaring electric guitars and gritty vocals, the pair stripped the track down to its bare country-rock bones.
More than 50 years after those haunting harmonies were laid down, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris’ “Love Hurts” remains a timeless masterpiece of classic country heartbreak and a brilliant, fleeting musical partnership.
