Heartstopper Forever Gets Major Casting Shakeup As Post-Production Wraps

The Truham and Higgs squad is gearing up for one last emotional goodbye in the upcoming Netflix feature film Heartstopper Forever. But as production pushes forward, the eagerly-awaited finale has announced a major shakeup in the cast: Olivia Colman will not be returning to her beloved role as Nick’s mother, Sarah Nelson.

Stepping into the iconic role will be BAFTA-winning actress Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Ludwig), who joins the franchise alongside stage and screen veteran Derek Jacobi in a newly announced cameo role.

Why was Olivia Colman recast for the Heartstopper movie?

Fans of the hit coming-of-age drama will remember Colman’s heartwarming performance in Seasons 1 and 2—particularly the viral, tear-jerking scene where Nick (Kit Connor) comes out to her as bisexual. However, Colman was notably absent from Season 3, and unfortunately, she was unable to return for the feature-length finale.

Rather than writing the character out of the story completely, creator and writer Alice Oseman made the tough call to recast the role.

“When beginning to work on the Heartstopper Forever screenplay, I knew how important it was that Sarah, Nick’s mum, appeared in the story,” Oseman explained via Netflix. “It felt nonsensical for her to be absent from this final chapter, given some of the emotional struggles Nick faces.” Oseman expressed deep gratitude for Colman’s “beautiful performance” but shared their excitement for Anna Maxwell Martin taking over the mantle.

“Anna perfectly embodies Sarah’s gentle, down-to-earth energy, and it was magical to witness her scenes with Kit Connor during the film shoot,” Oseman added. “I can’t wait for Heartstopper fans to experience her interpretation of Sarah Nelson.”

Aside from the recasting of Sarah Nelson and the addition of Derek Jacobi, fans can rest easy knowing that the rest of the core cast is returning for the grand finale.

Behind the Scenes and Release Window

The finale is shaping up to be a massive event for Netflix. Directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice), who takes the reins from Euros Lyn, the movie adapts the forthcoming sixth volume of Oseman’s Heartstopper graphic novel series, as well as their 2015 novella Nick and Charlie. Notably, stars Joe Locke and Kit Connor are also stepping up to serve as executive producers for the first time.

While Netflix hasn’t locked in an exact release date just yet, we do have a solid release window. Alice Oseman recently confirmed that the movie will premiere after the release of the final graphic novel. Since Volume 6 hits shelves on July 2, 2026, fans should expect Heartstopper Forever to land on Netflix sometime in late 2026.

In late March, Oseman shared a big announcement regarding post-production (reminder that filming concluded alongside the film title reveal in July 2025), writing: 

“We have wrapped post-production on Heartstopper Forever ❤️🍂 All creative work on the film is complete, with the exception of quality checks and dubbing in other languages. The film exists!!! Joy and pain and love and fear and all that stuff! Oh my god I can’t wait for you to see this thing.

This is just a small assortment of the people involved in post production!! There are many many more who’ve been working behind the scenes. Thank you so much to everyone for their hard work!”

Heartstopper Forever arrives on Netflix in 2026.
