Here’s how to explore Alberta’s Drumheller during the winter

13 February 20263 Mins Read

Drumheller is a lively town during the summer, and there’s still lots to explore in the winter.

People tend to just visit Drumheller when they are children or for a day trip, but people don’t know there’s still a lively town awaiting them even in the off-season. During the winter, there are musical festivals, the museum, and a deep history you can learn about all around Drumheller.

If you’re looking for a trip away from the city this winter, you can mark this one on the map.

Where to stay

I went to Drumheller this winter thanks to Travel Alberta, and we stayed at one of the newest hotels to be built within the town. Despite this, I would have to recommend The Tyrannosaurus Rest B&B, or the T-Rest.

This bed and breakfast is hosted by Shawn, a local to Drumheller. He’s knowledgeable about all the things to do around town, the history of the space, and even owns an ice cream shop just around the way. He was incredibly kind and welcoming, quite possibly the best host I’ve ever experienced in a bed and breakfast.

The house itself, too, is stunning. With antique furnishings and accessories adorning the rooms, you feel as if you’ve been transported back in time in the best way.

What to eat

Find yourself hungry? No problem, there’s a plethora of food options just waiting for you.

Heller Good Sandwiches would be my personal first choice, with delicious sandwiches made by a wife and husband who have lit up the community in more ways than one. I’ll get more into that later.

Also, shockingly, Drumheller has an incredible Indian restaurant: Sam’s Kitchen. I kept hearing about this place wherever I went in the town, and everyone had only good things to say about it. The same thing goes for their local sushi restaurant, DAMOA, which had shockingly great sushi for such an inland spot.

What to do

Remember Heller Good Sandwiches? The same owners coordinate the town’s big winter music festival, Cold Bones Fest.

This festival has been steadily growing since its first year in 2024. Now, it’s one of the town’s biggest festivals in the wintertime, bringing in loads of people from in and around the town. With this festival taking over several spots, it’s the perfect way to get your daily dose of new music.

And, last but not least, you can’t forget the Royal Tyrell Museum.

I will say, I remember it being a lot smaller when I was younger, and wow, it has grown exponentially. This museum is nothing short of spectacular, with history from millions of years ago available right at your fingertips. You can see real work right in front of you, even staring up at the large Tyrannosaurus Rex and Mammoth.

Drumheller is definitely a spot to go to, even in the wintertime. It’s almost better, with the entire town at your disposal, ready to be explored.

I can’t wait to be back. Now it’s your turn to take the wheel and take on the dinosaur capital.
