Highland cows and yoga with alpacas: The best animal experiences in and around Edmonton

22 July 20263 Mins Read

Animal experiences, like horseback riding or yoga with alpacas, are some of life’s greatest joys. What’s better than being in Edmonton with these furry friends?

We’ve rounded up some of the best animal experiences in and around Edmonton that you’ll be able to take advantage of this season. From alpacas to horses to cows, there are more than a few animals to go around. Even the cute Highland cows are going to be out this summer, so take advantage of the weather and check them out.

You won’t have to go any further to search for the best events, though. Without further ado, let’s get into these animal activities coming up soon.

Putting Horse Ranch is located just outside of Edmonton, a little north of Spruce Grove, and is just awaiting your arrival.

The prime experiences at this ranch are the horse experiences. For $99 plus GST, you can spend time with a horse, brushing and light riding. You can also take private lessons for horse riding if you’re interested! If you’re looking for more of a journey, you’ll probably be looking forward to the horse wagon rides.

When: Monday to Sunday
Time: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: 53312 Range Rd. 272, Spruce Grove, Alta.
Cost: $99+

According to Sunnybrook Farm Museum, visitors can wander through the site and explore original structures, including a log house, blacksmith shop, and dairy barn, each carefully preserved to reflect its original purpose.

What makes this an animal experience, you may ask? During the warmer months, visitors can also get a taste of hands-on farm life with activities like milking Betsy, the museum’s resident cow. She’s become a bit of a favourite on-site, especially for younger visitors.

There certainly isn’t any better time to visit than this season.

When: Open Monday to Friday
Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m
Where: 2897 Botterill Cres., Red Deer, Alta.
Cost: Pay by donation

Complete with live music, local food vendors, and breweries, as well as the magic of exotic and wild animals, Zoobrew transforms the family-friendly atmosphere of the local Valley Zoo into an ultra-fun escape. With over 25 breweries, wineries, and distilleries, you’ll be sipping all night long.

When: Saturday, Aug. 21, 2026
Time: 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Where: Edmonton Valley Zoo — 13315 Buena Vista Rd. NW, Edmonton, Alta.
Cost: $33.50

Here at Grazing Acres, you’ll be able to breathe in that fresh air and meet a herd of Highland cows. You can experience the farm at your own pace, while stopping at different stations to learn more about the unique breed. Not to mention,  there will be opportunities to feed the cows grass or grain, brush their hair, and even take a selfie with them.

When: Now until September 2026
Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Daysland, Alta.
Cost: $20+

This outdoor experience will allow you to breathe the fresh air and get your healthy dose of alpaca attention. You’ll be guided through a unique pairing of breath, movement, and meditation during this class. It will leave you feeling equal parts inspired and chill, all while surrounded by a herd of curious alpacas.

When: Now until September 2026
Time: Various times
Where: 51553 Range Rd. 225A, Sherwood Park, Alta.
Cost: $32
