How Soundproof Are Energy-Efficient Windows? STC Ratings Demystified

If traffic, barking dogs, lawn equipment or neighborhood activity keeps getting through your windows, replacement windows may improve the situation. But “soundproof” is not a precise description of residential windows. The better question is how much sound a particular window assembly reduces, and which rating measures that performance.

Energy-efficient windows can also improve noise control. After all, multiple panes, tighter seals and insulating spaces reduce pathways for both sound and heat. However, energy efficiency and acoustic performance are measured separately.

How Soundproof Are Energy-Efficient Windows?

Energy-efficient windows are not completely soundproof, but they can reduce outdoor noise. Double- and triple-pane glass, thicker or differently sized panes, laminated glass, tight seals and professional installation can all affect acoustic performance. For outdoor noise, compare OITC and STC.

What Does an STC Rating Mean?

STC stands for Sound Transmission Class. It is a rating used to classify how well a building element reduces airborne sound transmission. The rating is based on laboratory testing across a range of frequencies and is particularly relevant to speech and other midrange sounds. A higher STC rating means better sound insulation.

What Is OITC, and Why Does It Matter?

OITC stands for Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class. Unlike STC, it is designed to better represent exterior noise entering a building.

That distinction matters if your main complaint is traffic, aircraft, construction or other outdoor noise. The National Glass Association explains that OITC covers a broader frequency range than STC, including lower frequencies associated with exterior noise. When comparing energy-efficient windows for a noisy location, ask the contractor for both STC and OITC ratings.

Which Window Features Reduce Outdoor Noise?

Glass construction has a major influence on sound transmission. Thicker glass, different pane thicknesses, laminated glass and wider insulating spaces can improve acoustic performance. Tight seals and proper installation also matter because sound can enter through gaps around the window.

Double-Pane vs. Triple-Pane Windows

Adding a second pane generally provides better sound control than an older single-pane window. Triple-pane construction adds another layer and insulating space, but it does not automatically provide the best acoustic performance.

The glass configuration matters as much as the number of panes. Andersen notes that dual-pane windows with thicker or dissimilar glass can outperform some triple-pane configurations for sound reduction.

Dissimilar Glass Thicknesses

Using panes of different thicknesses changes the frequencies at which the glass vibrates. That can make it harder for certain sounds to pass through the window assembly. So, don’t assume a window labeled “triple pane” will provide the greatest noise reduction. Ask for the tested STC and OITC ratings of the exact configuration being quoted.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass contains an interlayer between two sheets of glass. That interlayer dampens vibration and can improve sound transmission performance. The National Glass Association identifies laminated glass as a way to increase damping and reduce sound transmission. Do Energy-Efficient Windows Also Keep Your Home Quieter?

Often, yes, but energy performance and acoustic performance should be evaluated separately. Low-E coatings, insulating gas and lower U-factors address heat transfer; STC and OITC address sound transmission. A window should be evaluated using the ratings relevant to both goals.

A window can therefore be highly energy efficient without offering exceptional noise reduction. A specialized acoustic glass package may improve sound control without being the most efficient configuration for a particular climate.
