How to buy men’s statement jewellery | Canada Voices

Men’s jewellery is having a style moment, put in the spotlight this awards season in part by the stars of Heated Rivalry. Canadian actor Hudson Williams wore a Bulgari Serpenti necklace and hoop earrings to the Golden Globes, while Connor Storrie made headlines at the Actor Awards in a sparkling, $697,500 platinum-and-diamond necklace by Tiffany & Co.

It’s not just a red-carpet trend, either. Alexandre Piché, co-owner of Montreal-based jewellery brand Deux Lions, said that in recent years he’s noticed more men looking to invest in jewellery “that they’ll feel good with and that they’ll be able to grow with.” But for everyday wear, many are opting for a more pared-down approach without too much layering or sparkle.

“We were stacking a lot of jewellery for a long time. Now, for me, less is more,” said Piché. To male customers buying jewellery for the first time, he will often suggest starting with a few core pieces – a ring, a bracelet and a chain – and seeing what works. “It needs to feel natural,” said Piché.

In terms of trends, Canadian stylist Ashley Galang, who has worked with actors such as Manny Jacinto and Thomas Doherty, has noticed more pieces incorporating gems and pearls and celebs layering a pendant necklace with daintier chains. Other popular jewellery styles are signet rings, small earrings and curb chain necklaces with a small pendant that can be customized, Galang said.

Of course, you’ll also want to consider your budget when picking out jewellery, although some fine and demi-fine jewellery brands do offer their top styles in a variety of metals (and price points).

Fashion or costume jewellery made of materials such as brass or stainless steel is the most affordable option if you want to just try a trend. “But there is a lifespan to it, and it does break easily and tarnishes and you’ll have to throw it out at a certain point,” said Piché. Jewellery made of materials such as sterling silver and gold vermeil are pricier but will last longer, so Piché suggests investing in solid gold for pieces that “you’re going to want to wear forever” and eventually “give your grandkids.” Keep in mind also that gold and silver styles can easily be polished, resized and even redesigned over time.
