Iconic 2000s Indie Rock Band Announce Return to Japan's Music Festival After 15 Years

3 February 20263 Mins Read

The Strokes announced their return to Asia for a highly anticipated music festival.

The iconic indie rock band sparked excitement after Summer Sonic 2026 unveiled the headliners for this year’s event.

The forthcoming event, which is considered one of the largest urban music festivals in Japan, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

To ramp up the buzz, the festival has invited global music artists to headline the three-day event, including The Strokes.

In an Instagram post, the five-piece American rock band, fronted by Julian Casablancas, teased fans with news about their upcoming performance.

“Japan, we’re headed your way this August for @summersonic_official,” the caption reads.

The post sent fans into a frenzy, with many expressing how thrilled they are to see the band in person and to hear them perform their classic hits.

“See you in Tokyo!” one wrote.

“PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SING MY WAY IN JAPANESE AGAIN,” a follower said.

“SING WELCOME 2 JAPAN IN THE GHOSTBUSTERS SHIRT BABY JULES,” a commenter said.

“Welcome to Japan, again,” a fan echoed, referring to their 2013 hit song.

On the other hand, fans speculated that their upcoming concert in Japan is more than just a festival performance and might hint at a possible album release.

“YALL. Every time they’ve done Summer Sonic, they dropped an album. 2003, 2011 and now 2026. THIS IS HUGE,” an Instagram user pointed out.

The same goes for another who said, “I have a feeling we’re getting an album this year.”

Japan’s Summer Sonic 2026 will kick off on Aug. 14 to Aug. 16 in two locations: ZOZO Marine Stadium and Makuhari Messe in Tokyo and the other at Expo ’70 Commemorative Park in Suita, Osaka.

Joining The Strokes as headliners is the Japanese rock band L’Arc-en-Ciel.

In addition, the event also features a slew of international acts, including the ‘90s funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai, British singer-songwriter FKA Twigs, Kasabian, BLACKPINK’s Jennie, Steve Lacy, Pendulum, Suede, Alex Warren and David Byrne as special guests.

Furthermore, K-pop group LE SSERAFIM will also make their festival debut.

Besides the lineup of local artists and bands such as Sakanaction, Cornelius, Suchmos, Hitsujibungaku and Tatsuya Kitani, Irish band Kodaline is set for a farewell performance before disbanding.

As mentioned, this will be the third time that The Strokes have been invited to Japan’s Summer Sonic. The first was in 2003 when they performed in Osaka and Tokyo while touring for their second album, Room on Fire.

Eight years later, the band returned as headliners with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
