Japan Is Opening Its First-Ever Pokémon Airport—and Fans Will Want to Book a Flight ASAP

2 July 20262 Mins Read

Beginning July 7, travelers flying into Ishikawa Prefecture can land at the world’s very first Pokémon-themed airport, where Pikachu and dozens of other Pokémon characters will greet visitors before they even leave the terminal.

For a limited time through September 2029, Noto Satoyama Airport will officially operate under the nickname “Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport,” making it the first airport anywhere in the world to carry the Pokémon name. The transformation is part of a partnership between Ishikawa Prefecture and the Pokémon With You Foundation, which aims to support tourism and help the Noto Peninsula continue recovering after the devastating 2024 earthquake.

Visitors can expect far more than a few Pokémon decals. The airport has been completely reimagined as an immersive experience designed to delight fans of all ages.

Pikachu takes flight

Inside the terminal, travelers will find all 111 Flying-type Pokémon discovered as of May 2026 hidden throughout the airport, turning every trip into a real-life scavenger hunt. A massive Pikachu-and-airplane balloon floats above the central atrium, while Pokémon decorate boarding bridges, arrival halls, observation decks, walls, and even the airport’s exterior.

Passengers arriving in Noto will also be welcomed by a large display of “Bright Future,” a special artwork created to symbolize the region’s recovery, alongside life-sized statues of Pikachu, Plusle, and Minun. Visitors can browse airport-exclusive merchandise—including luggage tags, T-shirts, keychains, and suitcase belts—or stop by the themed restaurant for Pokémon-inspired pancakes and specialty drinks.

More than a tourist attraction

While Pokémon fans may flock to the airport for selfies and souvenirs, the project serves a much larger purpose. According to local reports, the themed airport was created to encourage travelers to explore the Noto Peninsula, an area still rebuilding after the powerful earthquake that struck on New Year’s Day 2024.

Pokémon-themed buses will transport visitors to attractions across the region, including special monuments, footbaths, and scenic destinations designed to boost local tourism and businesses.

Japan has long embraced Pokémon as a tourism ambassador through themed trains, colorful airplane liveries, and Pokémon Centers, but this marks the franchise’s biggest transportation collaboration yet.
