Position: Summer Drama Camp Counsellor
Location: Cochrane, AB

Sleeping Giants Theatre is looking for a friendly, organized and self motivated team player to join our team for summer camps this summer at the SLS Centre in Cochrane. The Summer Camp Counselors will work as a team to create exciting and educational days for all campers, as well as coordinating the presentation of a play for family and friends at the end of the camp.
Qualifications and Experience:
Post secondary education or equivalent experience in the theatre arts strongly preferred.
Experience working with children, and teaching either drama, singing or dance.
Prior summer camp counselor experience preferred.

Skills and Competencies:
Love of working with children & creating theatre.
Ability to teach drama, improv, and co-create mini plays with students
Strong classroom management skills and lots of patience.
Strong problem solving and quick thinking skills.
Ability to multitask and keep eyes on all members of the group to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing.
Flexibility and willingness to pivot and change plans with little notice (for example, with weather changes, group dynamics, etc.)
Empathy and awareness of others’ emotions is an asset. Drama camp can be a very vulnerable place for lots of kiddos, and we are committed to helping them feel seen and safe.
Ability to work both individually and as a team.
Strong communication skills, and ability to speak confidently in front of large groups of people.
Duties may include:
Crafting lesson plans prior to each day of camp according to the Sleeping Giants Summer Camp Curriculum.
Teaching children acting, movement and voice techniques in a fun, engaging, and accessible manner.
Being attuned to each student’s needs and abilities, and ensuring that every camper has an enriching and positive experience.
Assisting the campers in creating plays and characters, including leading creative writing exercises, imagination exercises, and teaching about story structure.
Creating sound cues to enhance the final performance.
Maintaining a safe environment, both physically and mentally, for learning and creativity.
Working with the Summer Camp Supervisor to ensure all necessary supplies are acquired before they are needed.
Managing first aid situations, and filing incident reports when necessary.
Assisting with all elements of the final performance at the end of camp, including directing the show, helping to write the script, create and run the sound cues, and perform in the show if necessary.
Reporting to the Managing Director on the successes and challenges of the camps, and assisting with future planning.
Running small drama workshops throughout the week in the non-drama summer camps at the SLS, as needed.
Assisting with social media and marketing efforts by participating in videos and pictures, and posting fun updates on socials.
Schedule and Availability:
The camps will be running the following weeks, from 9am – 4pm
July 6-9
July 13-17
July 20-24
August 10-14
August 17-21
There will be an additional 5 days of work (35 hours) before and after the camps for training and wrap-up, exact dates to be determined, but will be within the outside range of July 2 – August 28.
Compensation:
$25/hour

Sleeping Giants Theatre is the only theatre school in Cochrane for kids and adults, providing quality acting and musical theatre training to our community. We also collaborate with local businesses to bring unique theatrical experiences to the town of Cochrane, such as dinner theatre, cabarets, and improv shows. Our mission is to bring quality theatre experiences and education to our community in order to inspire a love and appreciation for the theatre arts, and help kids on their journey to becoming confident, creative, and wonderful human beings.
This summer, we are running a number of exciting drama camps for kids in partnership with the SLS Family Sports Centre. We are looking for a team of theatre arts enthusiasts to help us connect to our community and create incredible experiences for our students.
