Ledger’s new hardware wallet is an Android phone without the phone

15 October 20263 Mins Read

Ledger has announced its latest crypto-centric hardware effort, the Android-based Atom, a device that resembles a phone but is instead designed to be used alongside one. It arrives at a tricky time for Ledger, which has been forced to cease sales of some of its hardware across southeast Asia following hardware tampering in its supply chain, which has reportedly seen over $86 million worth of crypto stolen from across some users’ accounts.

While Ledger’s previous hardware wallet signers have been compact devices, running custom software and often with E Ink displays, the Atom is the spitting image of a regular Android smartphone. In fact it essentially is an Android phone, except for the fact that its eSIM capabilities have been limited to data-only, with no support for texting or calls.

The Atom runs on both Android OS and Ledger OS, which sits on its own secure element chip, allowing you to move into a secure environment for tasks like crypto transactions. Two Atom users can also send encrypted messages to one another using regular Android messaging apps, with the messages decrypted within Ledger OS on the recipient’s device. Ledger has designed the device with AI agents in mind, including a partnership with OpenClaw, designed so that agents can handle financial tasks without getting full access to digital wallets, with physical approval required to complete transactions.

Ledger says that the Atom is “not designed to replace your phone.” The company’s head of PR, Phillip Costigan, told me that Ledger recognized it was unlikely to be able to produce a device capable of competing with top Android handsets on camera and other specs, and so didn’t try to. The Atom is in fact intentionally limited in some respects: the 6.77-inch OLED display is only 60Hz, it runs on a Qualcomm Dragonwing chip rather than Snapdragon, and it only has a single rear camera and a 4,000mAh battery. Still, it will receive five years of Android OS updates, and at least seven years of support for spare parts, including a user-replaceable battery. It also has a physical privacy switch, which cuts power to the camera and microphone “at a circuit level.”

The launch couldn’t come at a worse time for Ledger. The company has confirmed reports that at least one of its hardware signers was sold by a reseller with “an unauthorized hardware implant,” which read users’ 24-word recovery phrases and transmitted them elsewhere using an eSIM. The discovery has forced Ledger to pause sales across southeast Asia, and at German retailer MediaMarkt. Reports suggest that over $86 million worth of crypto may have been stolen from across affected users, though Ledger hasn’t confirmed the scale of the losses.

That would be enough to give anyone pause before buying new Ledger hardware, at least from a third-party seller. Still, the company says that the Atom has been designed with physical anti-tampering measures, which it claims would have blocked the screen reader implants involved in the recent incident:

Core protection: A protective enclosure surrounds the Secure Element, MCU, and FPGA, and it is designed to detect any attempt to drill into or open this area.

Display and back cover detection: Ledger Atom detects when the display or back cover is removed. The back cover is paired with the device, so it cannot be swapped with a cover from another Ledger Atom.

Tamper-evident packaging: Ledger Atom’s packaging is designed to show whether it has been opened before it reaches you.

The Atom will be available from summer 2027. Reservations are open now, with a refundable $100 deposit to secure a Founder’s Edition device for $849. After the launch, the price will rise to $899.
