A new chapter of Hellboy’s saga in Hell begins this fall. On Thursday, Dark Horse Comics announced Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood, a two-part comic event that finds creator Mike Mignola revisiting the seminal series.
Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood takes place after the eighth issue of the original Hellboy in Hell series. In it, Hellboy sets out to rescue a young woman during the middle of a demonic uprising. “He steps in to save her, but nothing — and no one — are what they seem to be,” teases a news release announcing the comic.
Hellboy in Hell originally ended in 2016 after a four-year run. It continued Hellboy’s story after he was brought to Hell in the pages of the Hellboy: The Fury arc.
After Mignola and various artists drew Hellboy over the course of its 57 issues, Mignola drew all 10 Hellboy in Hell issues himself. However, that won’t be the case with Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood. French artist Cyrille Pomés will be drawing the two-issue event as he makes his American comics debut. You can see his main cover for issue #1 below as well as Mike Mignola’s variant cover.
“Yes, I too thought Hellboy in Hell was a closed book — but a while back I discovered the work of Cyrille Pomés and instantly fell in love with it,” Mignola said. “We actually met and when he said he’d like to do a Hellboy story, well, how could I say no to that? I still had half an idea for a Hell story rattling around in my head and invited him to flesh that out, so now what you have is a true collaboration on the story and his absolutely wonderful art and storytelling.”
Pomés said Mignola “was the artist whose early work had such a profound impact on me as a teenager, and whose evolution I’ve followed with awe ever since.” When he met Mignola, he shot his shot and asked if the Hellboy creator would write a script for him to draw. “His response still resonates with me today: ‘It would be an honor.'”
Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood #1, the first of two issues, goes on sale Oct. 7. Mignola and Pomés are being joined by Dave Stewart on colors, and Marc Riou will draw a variant cover for issue #2.
