Netflix Adds 8 Rob Reiner Classics to Celebrate the Legendary Director’s Legacy

Netflix has refreshed its library for February 1st, and in a touching tribute to a Hollywood legend, the streamer has added a significant collection of films directed by the late Rob Reiner. Following his passing recently, this drop offers fans a timely opportunity to revisit the work of a director who defined the romantic comedy genre and delivered some of the most memorable dramas of the last few decades.

While this selection doesn’t include every single hit from his vast filmography, it features a strong mix of his mid-career and later works, showcasing his ability to work with screen icons like Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Douglas. It’s common for streaming services to license specific packages from studios, and this “Rob Reiner Collection” seems to be a curated nod to his enduring legacy.

Here are the 7 Rob Reiner movies you can stream on Netflix starting today, with another joining on February 5th. Don’t forget you can also see Reiner in The Wolf of Wall Street (leaving March 1st).

The American President (1995)

  • Genre: Romantic Comedy / Drama
  • Cast: Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox
  • Runtime: 114 min

Before he created The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin penned this sharp, witty script, which Reiner brought to life. The film follows Andrew Shepherd (Douglas), a widowed U.S. President who attempts to pursue a relationship with an environmental lobbyist (Bening) while entering a reelection year. It’s arguably one of the best political rom-coms ever made, featuring that trademark Sorkin “walk and talk” dialogue and a heavy dose of 90s idealism.

The Bucket List (2007)

  • Genre: Adventure / Comedy / Drama
  • Cast: Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes
  • Runtime: 97 min

Two terminally ill men from vastly different worlds—a billionaire Edward (Nicholson) and a mechanic Carter (Freeman)—find themselves sharing a hospital room. They decide to break out and spend their remaining months completing a “bucket list” of things to do before they die, from skydiving to visiting the Taj Mahal. It’s a tearjerker that is elevated on the incredible charisma of its two leads.

Rumor Has It… (2005)

  • Genre: Romantic Comedy
  • Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, Shirley MacLaine, Mark Ruffalo
  • Runtime: 97 min

In this meta-comedy, Sarah Huttinger (Aniston) travels home for her sister’s wedding and uncovers a family secret: her grandmother (MacLaine) might be the inspiration for Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate, and she might be the result of a scandalous affair. She seeks out the wealthy tycoon (Costner) who might be her father. For Shirley MacLaine’s scene-stealing performance as the sharp-tongued grandmother.

Ghosts of Mississippi (1996)

  • Genre: Drama / History
  • Cast: Alec Baldwin, Whoopi Goldberg, James Woods
  • Runtime: 130 min

Reiner tackles a serious true story in this courtroom drama. Decades after the assassination of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, a prosecutor (Baldwin) reopens the case to finally convict white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith (Woods). Whoopi Goldberg plays Evers’ widow, Myrlie, who fought for justice for over 30 years. James Woods received an Academy Award nomination for his chilling portrayal of Beckwith.

Flipped (2010)

  • Genre: Romance / Coming-of-Age
  • Cast: Madeline Carroll, Callan McAuliffe, Rebecca De Mornay
  • Runtime: 90 min

Set in the late 50s and early 60s, this nostalgic film tracks the relationship between Juli and Bryce. When they first meet as kids, Juli knows it’s love, but Bryce is annoyed. As they hit junior high, the dynamic flips—just as Bryce starts to appreciate her, Juli begins to wonder if he’s essentially shallow. It captures the same innocent, period-piece nostalgia Reiner perfected in Stand by Me.

Alex & Emma (2003)

  • Genre: Romantic Comedy
  • Cast: Luke Wilson, Kate Hudson
  • Runtime: 96 min

Loosely inspired by the life of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, this rom-com features Luke Wilson as a writer with a gambling problem who must finish a novel in 30 days to pay off loan sharks. He hires a stenographer (Hudson), and as they work, her stubborn critiques of his story begin to reshape the novel—and their relationship.

Once More (2012)

  • Note: Also known as The Magic of Belle Isle
  • Genre: Comedy / Drama
  • Cast: Morgan Freeman, Virginia Madsen
  • Runtime: 109 min

Morgan Freeman reunites with Reiner to play Monte Wildhorn, a wheelchair-bound Western novelist who has lost his drive to write. He moves to a lakeside cabin for the summer and strikes up a friendship with the single mother next door (Madsen) and her daughters, who help him find his imagination again. A gentle, quiet performance from Freeman makes this a solid “Sunday afternoon” watch.

LBJ (2016)

  • Note: Arriving February 5th
  • Director: Rob Reiner
  • Cast: Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Richard Jenkins, Bill Pullman
  • Runtime: 98 min

In this political drama, Rob Reiner tackles the story of Lyndon B. Johnson (Harrelson). Thrust into the presidency after the assassination of JFK, Johnson must stabilize the nation and fight to pass the historic Civil Rights Act while contending with political enemies on all sides.
