Netflix Renewal Status & What to Expect

Netflix’s adaptation of Jennifer Iacopelli’s BookTok sensation sports-romance novel, Finding Her Edge, has gotten off to a brilliant start on Netflix. Season 1 delivers a satisfying ending, but leaves the door open for more. Will Netflix renew? Here’s everything we know so far.

In Finding Her Edge, we follow Adriana Russo (Madelyn Keys), a former competitive skater from a family with an esteemed history in ice skating. When her proud older sister, Elise (Alexandra Beaton), is injured in competition, Adriana decides to put the skates back on. But it’s not just for her own vanity. She needs to earn a sponsorship in order to save her esteemed family’s struggling ice rink. With her former partner — and lover — Freddie (Ollie Atkins) moving on to another partner, she ends up pretending to be in love with her new on-ice partner Brayden (Cale Ambrozic), if only to secure the all-important sponsorship.

Finding Her Edge has one of the spiciest and most emotionally conflicting love triangles you’ll see on television. Whether you’re Team Freddie or Team Brayden, it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat until Adriana ultimately makes her choice in the season finale. Suffice to say, we thoroughly enjoyed the show. “Finding Her Edge is a drama that’ll attract a lot of demographics, and it delivers a pleasing story to each of them,” we wrote in our review. “Whether that’s teenage drama, romance, and sibling rivalries, which will draw in fans of Heartstopper and slightly more adult-focused drama like Ginny & Georgia; or the young adult audience and fans of the novel; or indeed fans of figure skating.”

Has ‘Finding Her Edge’ been renewed for Season 2?

Netflix has not yet renewed Finding Her Edge for another season. But in terms of ratings and viewership, things are looking good.

In its first week, the series reached #4 on Netflix’s weekly top 10, covering viewership between January 19th and January 25th, with 5.5M views in its opening four days, based on 33.2M hours watched.  In addition, the show featured in the weekly top 10s in 76 countries out of a possible 91 around the globe. Stacking up performance against other teen/YA dramas from the past few years, you can see it ranks quite well in its opening few days:

Netflix Viewership Data – 1 Week Analysis

Title Cumulative Views (1 weeks) Rank
My Life with the Walter Boys – Season 1 7,500,000 1
A Good Girls Guide to Murder – Season 1 7,400,000 2
Finding Her Edge – Season 1 5,500,000 3
Geek Girl – Season 1 3,400,000 4
North of North – Season 1 3,000,000 5
Wolf King – Season 1 2,900,000 6
Bet – Season 1 2,400,000 7

Outside of viewership, although we liked the series, other reviews have been mixed, with it carrying a 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb at the time of publishing.

The drama was not developed as a limited series, so it has the opportunity to continue. However, there is no sequel to Iacopelli’s 2022 novel. Any new material would be wholly original to the Netflix adaptation. Looking into its future, the show could become a cornerstone YA romance drama on Netflix, much like The Summer I Turned Pretty (Prime Video) and Heated Rivalry (HBO).

What to expect from ‘Finding Her Edge’ Season 2

The season 1 ending doesn’t leave fans on a big cliffhanger. It offers up a conclusion that nicely ties up every lingering plot point. Notably, the Russo ice rink is saved, being bought out and finding new life. Plus, Adriana chooses to pursue her relationship with childhood sweetheart Freddie after putting an end to her ‘fake dating’ partnership with Brayden. But that’s not to say there’s no scope for another entry. Of course, where ice skating competitions are involved, and romantic tensions are precarious, there’s always room for drama.

Despite the show having to find its own way with no further source material to draw from, author Jennifer Iacopelli is excited by the possibility of further seasons. “The writers did such an incredible job of giving season 1 its own story while setting up so many new possibilities for drama in a potential season 2,” she teased to Elle. “I can’t wait to see how Adriana and Freddie handle finally being together while they skate together.”

The main cast members have also teased what season 2 could entail. For instance, Madelyn Keys wants Adriana to grow closer t0 those around her.  “I want to see her be more engaged in the other people in her lives and realize that not everything is about her sometimes,” she said. “I’d love her to be more of a support for not only her father, but also for the other people in her life.”

As for Ollie Atkins, he wants Freddie’s competitive nature to shine through even further. “I’d like to see his competitive spirit unlocked,” he said. ” I think that, with all of this history that he has in really compacting down his emotions and controlling how he expresses how he feels, I want to see him let loose. I think it would be really, really fun to play with.”

And then there’s Brayden, who ends the series with Riley as his new skating partner. “I thought we ended on a really great note for season 2, God willing,” said star Cale Ambrozic.

The pieces are in place for another instalment of Finding Her Edge. It’s your call, Netflix.
