Netflix’s Biggest Cyberpunk Series Is Doing Something Completely Different in Season 2

13 September 20266 Mins Read

There is no light at the end of the tunnel in Night City. In Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, light isn’t a symbol of hope at all. It’s just another overwhelming force bearing down on the people who live hard lives in an even harder city.

That philosophy comes from new series director Kai Ikarashi, who served as storyboard artist and animation director on season 1’s “Girl on Fire.” His use of light helped make it one of the series’ most visually distinctive and memorable episodes. Searing brightness visualizes the aging edgerunner Maine’s descent into cyberpsychosis (a form of psychological detachment caused by an overload of cybernetic augmentations), repeatedly isolating him in a bleached, featureless landscape before his story ends with an all-consuming fire.

“Rather than using light as something that connects us to the outside world, I used it as something that blocks it off,” Ikarashi tells Polygon. “I depicted light not as hope, but simply as a force.”

Released in 2022, the original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners combines Studio Trigger’s flashy animation with the oppressive dystopia of CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077. The story follows David Martinez (Zach Aguilar), a teenager who installs a powerful military implant called the Sandevistan and joins a crew of mercenaries — only to lose his sense of self as he replaces more and more of his body with cyberware. That arc ultimately transforms his charming but strained love story with netrunner Lucy into a tragic one. The neon-soaked Night City is colorful and exciting, but it’s a brutal place that more often than not consumes anyone who tries to rise above their station.

For Polygon’s 2026 Fall Preview, we spoke with Ikarashi about the new installment’s visual and musical identity, the emotional vulnerability of its protagonist, and how Edgerunners 2 moves on from David and Lucy without abandoning the larger themes of their story.

Not everything can be replaced with chrome

As the next installment in Netflix’s anthology series, Edgerunners 2 introduces a new cast led by Weak (Clancy Brown), a former cyberpunk legend forced to survive without any cybernetic enhancements, or “chrome.” Rather than follow a nobody’s rise to the status of a legend, the new season asks what happens when a legend falls all the way back down.

Cybernetic enhancements are fundamental to life in Night City and to the explosive action associated with Edgerunners. Without them, Weak is physically vulnerable in ways that David and Maine never were, although Ikarashi is more interested in what Weak’s body reveals about his internal struggle than how it restricts him during a fight.

“His physical vulnerability more directly reflects his emotional shifts than his actions,” Ikarashi says. “While I hope audiences pay attention to the different situations surrounding him as well, what I personally want them to focus on most is how his spirit confronts what can never be recovered, no matter how hard he struggles.”

Weak’s lack of chrome is more than a combat disadvantage. It’s a constant reminder of what he’s lost. In Night City, most legends die in the pursuit of that status, so there’s something almost even more depressing about a fall from grace like this.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 finds a new rhythm

The new visual identity of Edgerunners 2 is also inseparable from its music. Composer Tsuneo Imahori, whose credits include Trigun and Hajime no Ippo, gives the series a different sonic foundation from its predecessor. For Ikarashi, that score wasn’t something layered onto completed animation. It helped propel the imagery itself.

“We often refer to music for anime shows as ‘background music’ — gekiban in Japanese — but to be honest, I’ve never really liked the word because it seems to imply that animation should always come first, and the music is a supplementary medium,” Ikarashi says. “Mr. Imahori’s work, however, drove the imagery of this project forward through the raw power of the music itself.”

Ikarashi’s overall approach emerges as both experimental and unconventional. Producer Saya Elder previously told Polygon that the new director frequently challenged CD Projekt Red’s boundaries with his ideas. When asked to identify the most ambitious of them, Ikarashi references D (Nazeeh Tarsha), a netrunner in season 2 whose entire nomad clan was wiped out, leading him to pursue revenge in Night City.

“If I had to pinpoint it, it would be the framing of D alongside two specific characters, and how their final dynamic plays out,” Ikarashi says. “I can’t touch on the finer details just yet, as I’d love for everyone to experience it directly in the show.”

Polygon can also exclusively reveal an image from Edgerunners 2 that positions D next to Roman Carax, a young cinephile obsessed with documenting real-life in a city that has largely abandoned film for braindance (a form of immersive digital experience with a neural interface). So it seems possible he’s one of those two characters, but very few concrete details have been revealed ahead of the series’ release on Oct. 20.

Ikarashi did offer one broader hint: The team had extensive discussions about “the contrast in speed and distance between oneself and the city,” concepts he says were shaped in part by assistant director Naoto Uchida.

That idea already resonates with the tragedy of the original Edgerunners. David becomes impossibly fast through the Sandevistan, but no amount of speed allows him to escape Night City or fully close the emotional distance between himself and Lucy. Music drives a lot of the emotional weight of the first season as well. The hauntingly beautiful track “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” by Rosa Walton plays for the first time early in the series when Lucy and David braindance and experience walking and jumping on the Moon together, and it recurs as a motif through to the very end. For Lucy, going to the real Moon is a lifelong dream she fulfills in the last scene of the finale, a way to put an enormous amount of physical distance between herself and the emotional trauma inflicted upon her by Night City.

We don’t yet know how Edgerunners 2 will reinterpret that relationship between speed, distance, Night City, and the way that light oppresses and illuminates in equal measure. But Ikarashi’s comments suggest this new cast of characters may soon discover the same cruel lesson as David and Lucy: Moving faster or traveling farther doesn’t necessarily always mean you can ever escape.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will be released on Netflix Oct. 20, 2026.
