One of Canada’s most iconic chocolate bars has a sweet connection to Toronto

20 October 20263 Mins Read

Canada is known for its fair share of delicious treats, from maple syrup to BeaverTails, poutine, and even Coffee Crisp. But did you know that the crispy wafer-chocolate combination has a sweet connection to Toronto?

One of the country’s most beloved and iconic treats is a Canadian original since 1939, according to Nestlé Canada.

As it turns out, the beloved coffee-flavoured, chocolate-covered wafer bar has been produced in Toronto for decades.

But its ancestry dates back years, having begun in the U.K. in the 1930s.

The sweet history behind the Canadian classic

While the beloved chocolate is considered a Canadian classic, its roots actually trace back to the U.K. in the 1930s.

It was first known as a chocolate bar named Rowntree’s Wafer Crisp before being introduced to Canadians under the name Biscrisp.

“In 1938, a coffee variation was added to the line of flavoured Biscrisps and eventually became known as Coffee Crisp,” Nestlé Canada previously shared in an email to Curiocity.

“By 1948, Coffee Crisp was one of Canada’s most popular confectionery products, a position it has maintained throughout the years.”

Where is Coffee Crisp made in Canada?

Here’s where things get even sweeter for Torontonians.

According to Nestlé Canada, Coffee Crisp has only been made in one factory across the country, and that’s right in Toronto at 72 Sterling Rd.

In fact, millions of Coffee Crisp bars are produced in Canada every year, with Halloween being one of the peak times for the beloved chocolate treat.

The wafered chocolate, along with other chocolate favourites like Kit Kat, Aero, and Smarties, is produced in Toronto, too.

It has had some pretty interesting flavours over the years

While it’s remained a Canadian favourite for years, there have been a few variations of Coffee Crisps in the past.

Back in 2001, the brand introduced limited-edition fruit-flavoured bars, including Orange and Raspberry.

The brand has also explored coffee shop-inspired flavours like Caramel Iced Cappuccino, Vanilla Iced Cappuccino and Pumpkin Spiced Latte.

And that’s not all. Other variations have included Coffee Crisp Thins and Stix, Coffee Crisp Pops, and bite-sized Coffee Crisp.

Did you know that Smarties is one of Nestlé Canada’s oldest brands? We’d love to spill more, but that’s a story for another time.

Who knew supporting Canadian brands tasted so good?
