One of Ontario’s most attractive towns is also among the most historic

24 June 20263 Mins Read

Perth, Ontario, is one of those quaint, charming small towns that serve as a wonderful escape in the summer season. Whether you’re looking for stunning parks to explore or historic architecture to admire, this Ontario town is a beautiful destination worth the trip.

What’s up in Perth?

This town is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Toronto, which, if you’re down for the trip, can totally be a day experience.

According to The Town of Perth, it is home to beautiful parks, trails, and natural areas that outdoor enthusiasts would love.

“From scenic spots within town to peaceful rural escapes nearby, our community has plenty to explore,” they add.

Some must visits include Last Duel Park, a natural area named after the last and most infamous duel in Upper Canada, “where Messrs. Lyon and Wilson fought over the honour of Miss Elizabeth Hughes.”

Now, it’s a 27-acre retreat with public washrooms, docks, a boat launch, picnic areas and more. According to the town, you’ll also find the Wendy Laut Ribbon of Life walking trail and the Indigenous Healing Circle.

Another adventure is the Tay River Towpath Trail. Here you can immerse yourself in Perth’s 200-year history as you observe the interpretive panels. This section of the Rideau Trail features both natural and paved surfaces.

According to the town’s website, there’s a good chance you’ll fall in love with the area when you visit, and we couldn’t agree more.

History

You’ll find a mix of historic 19th-century architecture, too that give Perth a postcard-like atmosphere.

“We have heritage buildings crafted by 19th-century masons, the Tay River flowing underneath the bridges and a five-acre park hidden behind Town Hall,” shares the town.

The town was named after Perth, Scotland, in the early 1800s and was settled by a mix of Scottish, Irish and European settlers. They’ve since worked hard to maintain the heritage feel.

Besides its heritage buildings, another gem is the Tay River, which flows throughout the town, under several scenic bridges where you can cross to enjoy the view.

All of these historic features are on display at the town’s famous Stewart Park. It is home to the Stewart Park Rainbow Bridge, rustic restored mill, lush gardens, and towering old trees.

In fact, this park is what makes Perth the “wedding capital of eastern Ontario,” according to its website. It offers a romantic setting, perfect for exchanging vows.

What else is there to know about Perth?

This town is also known for its arts, culture, and theatre scene.

You’ll also get a wonderful culinary experience here, and there’s no shortage of outdoor activities, including cycling, golf, paddling, and hiking that you can partake.

As for main attractions, you must check out the Perth Museum, Hall of Remembrance, the Mammoth Cheese, the Big Red Chair, the Red Fox mural, the dry-stone bridge, the Crystal Palace, the Courthouse cannons, the Last Duel Pistols, and the Rocky Ramps.

Now, who’s ready for an adventure?
