One of Rock's Most Distinctive Voices Turns 75 Today

8 June 20263 Mins Read

In 1951, one of rock’s most recognizable voices was born in Wales.

Bonnie Tyler turns 75 on June 8, more than five decades after launching a career that produced some of the biggest hits of the 1970s and 1980s. Known for her distinctive husky vocals, Tyler became an international star with songs including “It’s a Heartache,” “Holding Out for a Hero” and her signature hit, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler first found success in the late 1970s. “It’s a Heartache” became a major international hit, reaching No. 4 in the United Kingdom and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. But it was her partnership with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman that would elevate her to another level.

Released in 1983, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” became Tyler’s biggest hit and one of the best-selling singles of all time. The song topped the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom and helped propel her album Faster Than the Speed of Night to No. 1 in Britain.

Years later, Tyler revealed that Steinman originally conceived the song for a proposed musical adaptation of Nosferatu.

“[Jim] told me he had started writing the song for a prospective musical version of Nosferatu years before, but never finished it,” Tyler recalled in a 2023 interview with The Guardian.

She also remembered writing a letter to a friend after recording the song in New York.

“It says: ‘I recorded an incredible song today. The trouble is, it’s so long, I don’t think anybody will ever play it,'” Tyler said. “‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ had to be shortened from seven to four minutes, but everybody loved it so much they played the full album version anyway.”

Steinman once described Tyler’s voice as one of the most passionate he had ever heard in rock music. In a 1983 interview, he said, “I thought she one of the most passionate voices I’d ever heard in rock & roll since Janis Joplin.”

Ironically, the voice that made Tyler famous came after a medical setback. In 1977, she underwent surgery to remove vocal cord nodules. During her recovery, she accidentally strained her voice, leaving her with the raspy tone that would become her trademark.

Tyler’s accomplishments extend far beyond her biggest hits. She has earned three Grammy nominations, three Brit Award nominations, represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest, and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2022 for services to music.

The milestone birthday comes just weeks after Tyler experienced a serious health scare. In May, she underwent emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal. A statement shared on her website said the operation was successful and that she was recuperating. Despite the setback, her team indicated they were optimistic about her recovery.

Even at 75, Tyler remains active. She released new music in both 2025 and 2026 and continues to perform for audiences around the world, proving that one of rock’s most distinctive voices still has plenty left to say.
