Ontario’s Dark Sky Reserve has jaw-dropping views of planets and constellations

21 January 20262 Mins Read

Did you know that the world’s first permanently designated Dark Sky Reserve is just a couple of hours from Toronto? Yep, the Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve is located in Gravenhurst, and it’s open year-round for spectators to take in clear views of planets, stars, and other constellations.

According to Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve, “If you are travelling north on Highway 11, there is an access point to District Road 13/the Southwood road between Gravenhurst and Washago.”

From there, you will turn west and drive about 20 minutes until you see the Torrance Barrens sign on your right.

Entry is free, and the entire preserve spans 5,000 acres, meaning there’s lots of space to find a spot to settle in for the evening.

The preserve is “a uniquely accessible place to view the night sky in its pristine state.”

The main dark sky viewing area is along a smooth granite outcrop. The spot is behind the Ministry sign on Southwood Road. For a “fully unobstructed 360-degree panorama,” visitors can walk along the main trail, across the boardwalk, and up the first ridge. The paths are marked, so it’s easy to find.

Torrance Barrens also provides a “clear sky chart,” so you can plan ahead to make sure that conditions are good enough to see into the night sky.

While you’re in Gravenhurst, make sure to grab a bite and a pint at the beloved Sawdust Brewing Company. There are yummy snacks and a list of local brews that include a little something for everyone.

Beverages, food, and a clear shot of the night sky — does it get any better than that?!
