Ontario’s ultimate winter escape has ski trails, snowshoeing and serene views

30 January 20263 Mins Read

Winter weekends call for road trips and getaways. Don’t let the snow keep you indoors. Bundle up and explore Ontario! And a great place to explore is Silent Lake Provincial Park for a few days of winter fun. Here’s what to know.

Silent Lake Provincial Park is about two and a half hours east of Toronto. This Ontario park is home to over hiking trails with scenic lookout points and mountain biking trails. But in the winter, it boasts 34 km of cross-country ski trails along with 8 km of snowshoe trails, according to Ontario Parks.

These trails wind around hardwoods, cedar swamps, groves of White Birch and beech stands.

The terrain is rugged, but ideal for family skiing. You can begin your adventure at the day-use parking lot, where all four connecting loops start and finish.

  • Green Loop – 2.5 km, novice-moderate
  • Red Loop – 5 km, novice-moderate
  • Yellow Loop – 10 km, moderate
  • Blue Loop – 16.5 km, difficult

As for snowshoeing, hit up Bonnie’s Pond Trail, a 3 km loop that manouvers past mature beech trees and a beaver pond. You can bring your own snowshoes or rent a pair from the park.

There are also opportunities for ice fishing on Lake Trout. “As the water cools, Lake Trout can be found at various depths in the lake, typically along contour lines and not far from baitfish,” shares Ontario Parks.

“Please note that gas–powered ice augers are not permitted.”

It’s important to note that Silent Lake stays true to its name – it’s silent as no motorboats or electric motors are permitted. Which most likely would not be an issue in the winter season, but is always important to note.

This park is truly an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.

It’s worth the drive!
