Oscar Winner Admits There's 1 Scene in His Movies He Won't Watch

The actor is Tom Hanks—and the film is Cast Away. But there’s one moment he says he still can’t bring himself to watch.

Reflecting on his performance, Hanks got candid about one moment from the film that still stays with him.

“There is a moment that was painful for me in ‘Cast Away,'” Hanks said on the June 18 episode of The Rest Is Entertainment podcast.

In the film, Hanks plays a FedEx systems analyst named Chuck. Chuck and his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) gives him a pocket watch prior to Chuck heading out on a business trip. His plane ends up crashing and he is the sole survivor—except he’s on a deserted island for four years before being rescued. When he finally returns home, he’s surprised to learn that Kelly got married—and he ends up returning the watch she gave him.

“Chuck is back in Kelly’s house, and he gives her [the] watch back, and there’s a moment where I just think, ‘I’m not there.’ … I do this gesture that I just think is false, and is me and is not Chuck.”

“If the movie is on, I will get up and leave the room before that scene comes on,” Hanks added.

Hanks said that he didn’t realize what he felt about the moment until he saw the finished film. But for him, it remains one of the few scenes in his career he struggles to revisit.

Cast Away was released in 2000 and became a massive box office success, earning widespread critical acclaim and multiple award nominations.

Hanks has recently been back in the headlines thanks to his return to voice work in Toy Story 5 alongside Tim Allen. The film hit theaters on Friday, June 19.
