The series, which airs on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ worldwide, follows the people’s favorite royal, Grand Prince I-AN (Byeon), as he becomes embroiled in a power struggle with other members of the royal family. With pressure on the prince to wed, he strikes up a marriage of convenience with Huiju (IU), the fashion exec heir of a Korean conglomerate, but as the pair work together to advance their own agendas, emotions begin to flare, and things don’t go quite as smoothly as they planned.
Fun Fact: IU’s stage name was conceived by her management company and means, “I and You become one through music.”
The prince and fashion exec share a history as they went to the same private school together and competed against each other in class and sports (think Hogwarts and the different Houses). There’s also Prime Minister Min (Noh Sang-hyun), another classmate who was in the same House as Huiju and always had a crush on her.
Even if their relationship is fake, they have an uphill battle as the power-hungry Queen Mother (Gong Seung-yeon) opposes the relationship and will do anything to ensure her son ascends the throne. It also seems she wants to make sure Grand Prince I-AN doesn’t marry for love, so we wonder if she chose one brother over another when deciding to choose between position and power over love and happiness.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the series was the biggest KDrama premiere for Disney+ to date. Perfect Crown premiered on Friday, Apr. 10, releasing two episodes over consecutive nights. Subsequently, the series drops two episodes weekly over consecutive nights on Fridays and Saturdays, and each episode is more fiery than the last. Without giving anything away, Episode 4 is a definite cliffhanger. Make sure you’re watching the epilogues at the end of each episode, after the credits. The tags add a little something to the episode that enhances a particular scene or gives additional meaning to what is going on between the Grand Prince and Huiju.
Not only is the series romantic, but it’s funny as well. KDramas usually have a great balance of the two. Byeon and IU have a palpable chemistry, but even though the two have not been linked romantically, they definitely have a playful nature between them. In Episode 3 of the series, the Grand Prince brings Huiju back to his private residence after she has been relentlessly harassed following the news of their relationship. With the unexpected guest in the residence and to keep up appearances, Huiju must spend the night with the prince in his quarters.

In this additional behind-the-scenes clip, Byeon Woo-seok tells IU not to make any weird noises while he’s carrying her. We imagine he doesn’t want to get distracted or start laughing and accidentally drop her!
Perfect Crown is available to stream in the U.S. on Hulu and available to stream internationally on Disney+. Episodes drop weekly on Friday and Saturday.
