This summer, Sony announced that it would be ceasing PlayStation physical disc production in January 2028. Fans were not pleased with this decision and tried to make their voices heard, to no avail. However, this doesn’t mean they’re ready to give up either. Part of the community came together and organized a digital blackout protest, which started officially on Aug. 23.
In the fiscal presentation for the first quarter of 2026, Sony CFO Lin Tao revealed that most PlayStation sales were digital. Therefore, eliminating discs from the equation wouldn’t financially hurt the company. At that point, the boycott was already scheduled for late August, and Sony’s disregard for players’ opinions about physical media only fueled them. On the same day as the protest was scheduled to begin, Sony sent out a reminder of its terms of use, which includes the PlayStation End User License Agreement, stating that “the Software is licensed to you, not sold.”
From Aug. 23 until Aug. 30, those who wish to participate in the PlayStation Blackout will not make in-game purchases, use the PlayStation Store, subscribe to PlayStation Plus, or play PlayStation. They are, however, encouraged to support physical media. At the moment, the protest is only set to last a week, although fans have reported that they will follow these guidelines indefinitely. On the other hand, there are players who asked for a rescheduling due to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta, which takes place on Aug. 28.
Various members of the gaming community have been fighting for their rights to own media because, as Sony so kindly pointed out, “virtual content is licensed, not owned.” Terminating disc production means that PlayStation owners will no longer actually own the games they purchase or be able to resell them in the future. Digital libraries cause uncertainty. They also destroy the secondhand market, which has always been more affordable for players to acquire games and allows original owners to repurpose games they no longer play.
Companies aren’t necessarily open to giving up this all-digital future. Take-Two Interactive, Grand Theft Auto 6 publisher, has been targeted by serious hackers who have threatened to leak the entire game, allegedly as a protest against the lack of physical release for GTA 6. However, Take-Two is taking the matter to court in an attempt to locate the dataminers, all while more leaks continue to surface on social media.
It is unknown, and honestly unlikely, whether this protest will affect Sony at all. Hopefully, the company will at least take notice that, while profits are a necessary priority in the business, fostering a massive disconnect with the players’ community could ultimately end up doing more harm than good.
