Quebec just launched a free tool that shows you where gas is cheapest near you

Gas prices have been rough lately, but a new government tool could help you stop overpaying at the pump.

The Régie de l’énergie launched a free interactive map on Wednesday called Régie essence Québec, and it might become one of the more useful bookmarks on your phone. The tool pulls live gas prices from more than 2,500 service stations across the province, including Costco locations, and displays them all in one place.

What makes this different from something like GasBuddy is that stations aren’t just voluntarily submitting their prices. As of April 1, retailers across Quebec are legally required to report their prices to the platform. That means the data is current and comprehensive, not crowdsourced and patchy.

The map is accessible at regieessencequebec.ca from your phone or computer, with no account or sign-up required. Once you’re looking at your area, you can tap any station to see its live per-litre price for regular, super, and diesel.

Quebec’s energy board says the tool is part of the implementation of legislation aimed at bringing greater transparency to the province’s gas market, making it a first of its kind in Canada.

Montreal drivers have had plenty of reason to pay closer attention to prices lately. Earlier this year, per-litre costs climbed close to 30% in the span of roughly three weeks, with the spike tied to global oil market volatility following conflict involving the U.S., Iran, and Israel. Prices are still high, and staying on top of where the cheapest nearby option is has become more of a reflex for a lot of people.
