Some albums define an era. Others become timeless.
Few records have earned that distinction quite like Tea for the Tillerman, the 1970 masterpiece that transformed Cat Stevens from a promising British singer-songwriter into one of music’s most beloved voices. Today, July 21, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer celebrates his 78th birthday.
Released just months after his album Mona Bone Jakon, Tea for the Tillerman featured enduring classics including “Wild World,” “Father and Son,” “Where Do the Children Play?” and the title track. More than five decades later, it remains a fixture on lists of the greatest albums ever made.
Even before the album became a classic, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell recognized what Stevens had created. According to a 1971 profile in Rock magazine, Blackwell called Tea for the Tillerman “the best album we’ve ever released,” an extraordinary endorsement from the man whose label was also home to artists like Traffic and King Crimson.
Ironically, Stevens initially wasn’t convinced the album needed an immediate hit single. “I think it’s a good idea not to release a single just yet,” he recalled telling his label. His instincts proved impeccable. A few months later, “Wild World” quietly broke through, introducing millions of listeners to the album and helping turn it into one of the defining singer-songwriter records of its generation.
Blackwell’s praise proved prophetic. More than five decades later, Rolling Stone named the album to its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, ranking it at No. 205 and writing, “With its chamber-pop arrangements, Tea for the Tillerman is one of the British folkie’s most ambitious albums (to take one example of Cat Stevens’ thinking at the time, the LP’s gentle, advice-dispensing ‘Father and Son’ began as a song for a musical he wanted to write about the Russian Revolution). It soothed countless living rooms in the Seventies, but the album is deceptively angst-y.”
His live performances also won over audiences in unexpected ways. Recalling an early opening set for Traffic at New York’s Fillmore East, Rock writer Bud Scoppa described how a skeptical crowd gradually fell under Stevens’ spell. By the end of the night, Scoppa wrote, listeners had discovered that Cat Stevens could “write songs, and sing them too, like nobody else.”
The success continued with Teaser and the Firecat, which produced “Morning Has Broken,” “Moonshadow” and “Peace Train.” Stevens ultimately sold more than 100 million records worldwide and penned “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” a song that became a hit for four different artists and earned him ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honors decades after he first wrote it.
In 1977, Stevens converted to Islam and adopted the name Yusuf Islam, stepping away from the pop music industry to focus on faith, education and humanitarian work. Nearly three decades later, he returned to secular music, eventually recording and touring again under the name Yusuf / Cat Stevens while introducing his songs to a new generation of fans.
When Stevens turns 78 on July 21, his legacy extends far beyond chart success. His songs have become part of the fabric of popular music, and Tea for the Tillerman continues to stand as one of rock’s greatest albums, just as Blackwell recognized more than 50 years ago.
