Rogue One’s most ruthless rebel gets his own Star Wars comic

3 April 20263 Mins Read

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Marvel Comics is rolling out a promising slate of one-shots. Hitting the stands from May through September, these single issues will zoom in on some of the era’s most compelling characters: Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, Chirrut and Baze, Darth Vader, and Saw Gerrera in his first-ever leading role in a comic.

As with the rest of the Star Wars prequel one-shots, the Saw issue features a cover by artist David Marquez, who previously did a series of covers for the main Star Wars (2015) title, issues #38-55. Written by Marc Bernardin, the author of 2024’s Mace Windu miniseries, and with art by Gabriel Guzman, the issue follows the Onderonian in the years after The Clone Wars, 10 years before the events of Rogue One take place.

A decade before he would ultimately give his life to the cause in Rogue One, the issue promises to offer a peek into Saw’s complex morality by placing him on a mission behind enemy lines. Seeking out an advantageous bit of information from the heart of Imperial power, Saw will be forced to make difficult decisions in order to achieve his goal.

The revolutionary Saw is well known for his dedication to bringing down the Empire at all costs, even when that put him at odds with the rest of the Rebel Alliance. After suffering the loss of his beloved sister Steela while they fought to free their home world from Separatist influence, his dedication to the cause only sharpened. Adopting the young Jyn Erso when she was tragically separated from her parents as a child, Saw eventually abandoned her for what he felt was the greater good. Jyn, still struggling with Saw’s betrayal, she also has a one-shot in this series in which she attempts to free a scared young prisoner of the Empire.

At various turns a terrorist or a hero, Saw’s “by any means necessary” approach has put him at odds with pretty much every faction in the galaxy at one point or another, including, occasionally, himself. Baffling some Star Wars fans while remaining a favorite for others, the one-shot is sure to deliver more insight into Gerrera’s complex, sometimes paradoxical morality.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a political film, but not because of its cast
