Solar Eclipse Drives Sharp Surge in Bookings Across Spain and Iceland

21 July 20264 Mins Read

In Brief: Flight demand rises 25% year-on-year from 2025 as eclipse tourism drives short breaks and boosts solo travel

New data from Amadeus Travel Intelligence reveals an increase in travel demand ahead of the August 2026 solar eclipse, with destinations along the eclipse path, including Spain and Iceland, seeing significant interest as travelers plan trips around the event. The August eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain in over 120 years, making it a landmark occasion for the region.

Flight bookings to airports along the eclipse path for arrivals between 7–12 August 2026 have increased 25% from the same period in 2025, according to data from Amadeus Air Visitors, highlighting significant growth for destinations expected to offer prime viewing opportunities.

Data from Amadeus Demand360® for the week of 9–16 August 2026 suggests stronger demand is translating into higher bookings and higher room rates on the books this year versus the same time last year.

Across Spain and Iceland combined, occupancy has risen by 16% from 2025 to 2026. Hotels are also seeing travelers spend more on accommodation, with Average Daily Rate (ADR) increasing by 36%.

Bilbao sees largest increase in demand, with US travelers leading inbound long haul travel

Travelers are concentrating around several key destinations expected to provide strong eclipse viewing opportunities and broader leisure appeal. Destinations with the most significant growth in bookings when compared to 2025 include Bilbao (+366%), Asturias (+292%) and Valencia (+137%).

International demand for eclipse travel spans multiple continents, with the top long haul origin markets for travelers heading to the destinations on the eclipse path being the USA, Japan, Argentina and Canada.

Travel patterns show increase in short trips and solo travel

Travel patterns also suggest that many travelers are building dedicated trips around the event itself. Short stays between one and five days increased by 57% compared to the same period last year, indicating that visitors are deliberately aligning their travel dates with the eclipse window.

40% of travelers heading to the destinations along the eclipse route are groups of two travelers, an 18% increase from 2025, suggesting strong demand from couples and travel companions seeking shared experiences.

Solo travel is also growing rapidly, increasing 48% compared with 2025, highlighting continued demand for independent and experience-led travel.

Lunar eclipses trigger booking spikes

Excitement around major astronomical events may be influencing travel behavior well in advance. Booking activity saw notable spikes during September 2025, around the time of a total lunar eclipse and widely visible ‘Blood Moon’ phenomenon, and again in March 2026, when another total lunar eclipse was visible across North America, the Pacific region, Australia, and parts of East Asia.

“Travelers increasingly seek experiences that feel unique and memorable, and major natural phenomena can create powerful motivations to travel,” says Sol Freixa, Vice President, Commercial, Destinations at Amadeus. “Short, high-intensity demand spikes present a clear opportunity for destinations and hotels. Data-driven insights support providers to anticipate booking patterns and adjust pricing strategies dynamically so they are best positioned to maximize revenue and can explore the capabilities to personalize and deliver the best experience for these travelers.”

Miguel Sanz, General Director at Turespaña comments, “International interest in the eclipse is already clearly evident. The total solar eclipse we will experience in Spain this year – which will be visible almost exclusively from Spain – along with those in 2027 and 2028, positions our country as the world’s leading astronomical destination in the coming years. This ‘Trio of Eclipses’ will also serve as a catalyst to bring international visibility to regions and tourism products linked to astronomy that extend beyond the event itself, positioning inland destinations and rural areas as ideal settings for new experiences in nature, science, and cultural tourism, thereby contributing to a more balanced distribution of tourist flows across the country.”
