Stephen King Says This Twisty Mystery Could Be the Best of 2026

In April 2026, a debut mystery built around six writers, a secluded Scottish island and a dead bestselling author arrived in bookstores. Just two months later, it’s earning recognition as one of the most talked-about novels of the season.

Evelyn Clarke’s “The Ending Writes Itself” was recently selected for Readworthy’s June 2026 list of top fiction picks, a roundup highlighting the books generating the most buzz among readers this season. Readworthy is the editorial blog of BookBub, a popular book discovery platform that helps readers find discounted and recommended titles.

The novel has quickly become a hit with mystery fans and debuted as an instant New York Times bestseller. It also earned an early endorsement from horror icon Stephen King, who praised it months before publication.

“Clearly in the running for the best mystery of 2026,” King wrote on X in August 2025. “A trove of tropes that mystery-lovers will love, including the dark and stormy night in its climax. It will remind you, in the best way, of Agatha Christie.”

What Is ‘The Ending Writes Itself’ About?

The novel centers on Arthur Fletch, a world-famous mystery author whose death leaves his final manuscript unfinished.

Six struggling writers are invited to Fletch’s private Scottish island under the impression they’re attending a literary retreat. Instead, they discover that the bestselling author’s final novel lacks an ending.

Fletch’s publisher and agent offer the group a life-changing opportunity: Whoever can write the best ending to the unfinished manuscript will receive a massive payday and the chance to relaunch their career. There’s just one catch. They have only 72 hours to do it.

As the competition unfolds, the writers find themselves trapped on the island while a series of deadly events begins to unfold.

Why Readers Are Talking About It

During an April appearance on Barnes & Noble’s “Poured Over” podcast, Clarke described the book as the story of “six midlist struggling authors” who arrive on a private island expecting a literary gathering before discovering their famous host is dead. The writers are then forced into a high-stakes competition to finish his final novel while isolated from the outside world.

Clarke and co-creator V. E. Schwab said they intentionally leaned into classic mystery elements while creating a story that also explores publishing, ambition and the pressures faced by working authors.

“We weren’t trying to reinvent the mystery book wheel,” Clarke said during the interview. “We were playing with a lot of the tropes of mysteries and we just had fun with that.”

The novel has also earned praise from bestselling authors including Karin Slaughter, who called it “smart, original and completely addictive,” and A. J. Finn, who described it as “the most fun I’ve had with a book in a very, very long time.”

For mystery readers looking for a locked-room thriller with strong Agatha Christie vibes and plenty of twists, “The Ending Writes Itself” is quickly becoming one of 2026’s breakout novels.
